Punishing Rwanda for defending its border against a genocidal militia that still openly dreams of finishing the job is a grotesque moral inversion. The real disgrace lies with a Congolese government that shelters those fighters and a mediator too obsessed with mineral interests to confront the truth. Kicking a basketball club off the court changes none of that and merely turns innocent athletes into pawns in a cynical political game.
A government accused of fueling a brutal war marked by mass executions, rape and child soldiers should not be allowed to buy a clean international image through basketball. Dropping one army-funded club while keeping the lucrative sponsorship money and the finals in Kigali is little more than an empty political gesture. Escalating sanctions and a lost trade deal make it painfully clear where the line should have been drawn long ago.
