The Facts

  • Lionel Messi played his farewell game for Argentina's national team on Tuesday, closing his international career in a 3-0 friendly win over Benin at Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires in front of more than 85,000 fans.
  • He played the full 90 minutes in his 208th appearance for Argentina, scoring a penalty goal in the 70th minute after assisting on goals by Nicolás Otamendi and Nico Paz earlier in the second half. Otamendi himself also made his final international game.
  • Addressing the crowd after the final whistle, Messi said this was "the saddest day of [his] career" and that playing for Argentina for more than 20 years was a "huge source of pride." He also remembered his late father, who died in August.

The Spin

Narrative A

This farewell landed flat, and the blame sits with Argentine soccer chiefs. Stacking friendlies against overmatched minnows while squeezing fans with absurd ticket prices, then hijacking the tribute drone show for ads, says everything about the priorities at work. A career this monumental deserved a real opponent and a real celebration.

Narrative B

Nitpicking the opponent misses the whole point of a night like this. Two assists, a goal, a stadium of 85,000 fans in tears and a farewell speech from the most decorated captain in the country's history made this a fairytale no scheduling quibble can diminish. Honoring a generational talent on home soil, surrounded by family and the fans who lived every moment with him, is exactly how a legend should exit.
