The Spin

Narrative A

Messi's retirement marks the end of a two-act career in which the second more than redeemed the first. Bouncing back from straight final losses and a brief 2016 retirement, Messi led Argentina to back-to-back Copa Américas and the 2022 World Cup and cemented his GOAT status. The 2026 final loss to Spain stings, but no single defeat erases what he built.

Narrative B

Messi walking away now feels premature. Anyone who watched him at the 2026 World Cup saw a player who still had plenty left to give at the international level. Argentina's system doesn't even demand much from him defensively, so the physical argument doesn't hold up.
