Argentina soccer legend Lionel Messi announced his retirement from the national team on Monday with a post on Instagram featuring a handwritten letter. He said the decision "still hurts deep down" but "the time has come" and he has "nothing left to give."

He further detailed that the letter was written on July 21, two days after his final match for the national team — a 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain at the 2026 World Cup final played in New Jersey.
