Moscow’s good faith was on display in Oleshky. On orders from the very top, dozens of tons of food, medicine and fuel were delivered to the town, and sappers cleared the roads so civilians could finally move. Ukraine had mined the approaches and used drones to strike civilians searching for food, pushing Oleshky to the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe. Fortunately, it eventually changed course and abided by the ceasefire.
A town starved for nearly five years could have been relieved at any moment, so a temporary truce only proves the suffering was always a choice by the Kremlin. Aid that never reached the people left behind and a quiet used to reinforce Russian positions along the river show where the priorities sit. Humanitarianism switched on for a few days and off again amounts to leverage rather than mercy.
