Louisiana Republicans just stripped a majority-Black city of its democratically chosen clerk of court before he could even take office. That is blatant voter suppression with a legislative stamp on it. Even Senator Jay Morris admitted he didn't bother consulting anyone in New Orleans before filing the bill, with Governor Landry now rushing to sign this into law, making clear the goal was always to silence Black voters, not about efficiency.
Consolidating these offices is straightforward, good-government reform. Orleans Parish is the only place in Louisiana with two clerks of court, and taxpayers across the state have been footing the bill for that redundancy for years. The merged office will still be led by a Black elected official, Chelsey Richard Napoleon, so the racism framing falls apart immediately. Fewer redundant elected positions means leaner government, not voter suppression.
