Kenya scored a real diplomatic win by getting Russia to agree that Kenyans will no longer be enlisted through the Russian Ministry of Defense. More than 1,000 Kenyans were pulled into this war, many deceived with promises of civilian jobs, and Nairobi finally drew a hard line. This agreement proves that firm but measured diplomacy can protect citizens without blowing up a long-standing bilateral relationship.
A handshake agreement with Moscow means nothing when Kenya still has no law banning citizens from joining foreign armies, and predatory recruiters face zero legal consequences. Rogue state officials colluded with trafficking networks to send young Kenyans to their deaths, and a diplomatic photo-op doesn't fix that systemic failure. Real protection demands parliamentary oversight, arrests and enforceable legislation — not just Lavrov's word.
