Israeli Strike Kills Christian Party Official Near Beirut

Is Hezbollah's refusal to negotiate a brave act of resistance or a reckless death sentence for Lebanon?

The Facts

  • An Israeli strike on an apartment in Ain Saadeh, a predominantly Christian town east of Beirut, killed three people on Sunday, including Lebanese Forces Party official Pierre Moawad and his wife, Flavia, according to Lebanon's health ministry. The Lebanese Forces are a Christian political party in Lebanon.
  • Lebanese Forces Party parliamentarian Razi El Hage said his party was "paying a heavy price for a war into which we have been dragged by the lawless organisation Hezbollah." The Israeli military said Moawad "was definitely not a target" and that it was reviewing the circumstances of the strike.
  • Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea said Israel's intended target was "a leader of Iran's Quds Force" and called on security services to compile precise lists of displaced people, who are largely Shiites, in areas considered safe. Lebanon's health ministry reported 1,497 people have been killed since March 2.

The Spin

Anti-Iran narrative

Hezbollah's reckless warmongering is costing innocent Lebanese lives — even Christians with zero ties to the conflict. Pierre Moawad and his wife, Flavia, are dead because Hezbollah dragged Lebanon into yet another war it didn't choose. A lawless armed group shouldn't get to decide when an entire country goes to war.

Anti-Israel narrative

Pierre Mouawad and the party of which he was a member are staunchly anti-Hezbollah, and the Lebanese Forces have collaborated with Israel in the past. Still, this has not stopped Israel from displacing and murdering Lebanese Christians, whom it seeks to use as a proxy against Hezbollah. Of course, Israel's strategy of sectarian divide and rule will fail.
