Imprisoning a young activist for a decade over speeches, petitions and meetings is punishment for dissent, not justice. Piling on charges to keep critics behind bars well into middle age exposes a system more threatened by ideas than by any genuine danger. And governments that look away and continue trading as usual are not neutral observers — they are helping sustain the very system that keeps people in prison.
Calling on foreign governments to punish your city crosses the line between protest and collaboration, and no nation takes that lightly. Free speech does not extend to schemes coercing governments through external pressure; courts elsewhere would take such conduct seriously, too. The deepest betrayal, however, came from overseas supporters who encouraged the campaign, then disappeared when the consequences arrived.
