Trump's pardon of a convicted narco-state operator has made a mockery of accountability in Honduras. A court just wiped away fraud and money laundering charges against Hernández, a man U.S. prosecutors called the center of one of the largest drug-trafficking conspiracies in the world. Environmental defenders are being murdered while the powerful walk free — and Washington just handed them a roadmap.
The Honduran court found no credible evidence tying Hernández to the Pandora case's budgetary crimes — the prosecution simply couldn't prove he authorized or benefited from the diverted funds. Calling this political persecution isn't spin; the charges collapsed on their own legal merits. Dropping a case without sufficient evidence is exactly how a functioning justice system is supposed to work.
