Guterres' Final UN Speech: 'Cracks Have Become Canyons'
Was Guterres right to confront the world's crises head-on or did his speech mask a failure to reform a faltering U.N.?

Guterres should be applauded for voicing the existential threats to the world as we know it. Vested interests bankroll efforts to muddy the truth and stall action, all while wars rage unchecked, AI races ahead of regulations and climate tipping points creep closer. Telling that truth without compromise is just what the U.N.'s top job demands.
Right narrative
A decade of speeches solved nothing under Guterres' tender, and lofty warnings don't count as leadership. Wars raged, brutal regimes escaped accountability and the U.N. burned endless energy obsessing over Israel while its chief never even showed up to the country after Oct. 7. The next secretary-general needs to actually reform this institution instead of narrating its decline on exit.
