The Spin

Left narrative

This is textbook xenophobia coming from the highest levels of society, and equating nationality with ethnicity is a dangerous idea that has no place in modern sport or politics. France's squad is made up entirely of French citizens, and dismissing that because of skin color or surnames is exactly the kind of thinking that poisons public discourse. The same logic would gut England's squad and erase the immigrant contributions.

Right narrative

Rajoy's remark reads far more like political sarcasm than a literal claim that the French team isn't French, but the Sánchez government sees an opportunity to distract from its failed governance. But even taken seriously, national teams inevitably reflect demographic shifts, making them a visible symbol of broader changes that many citizens believe deserve open discussion rather than accusations of xenophobia.
