Version 7.7.2
AR-15s and high-capacity magazines are weapons designed to maximize casualties, and banning them fits squarely within America's long tradition of restricting uniquely dangerous arms. The Highland Park shooter fired 83 rounds in 40 seconds, and that kind of killing power clearly has no legitimate civilian purpose. Illinois set a model worth following, taking the most important step towards healing from America's gun epidemic.
Assault weapon bans are neither constitutional nor effective. Rifles of all types account for under 3% of gun homicides, and 79% of crime guns are obtained illegally, meaning these laws target the wrong people entirely. Over 32 million Americans own AR-15-style rifles for lawful purposes, making them clearly protected under the Supreme Court's common-use standard precedent. With SCOTUS now taking up a similar case, these bans are on borrowed time.
