Is this needed for a politically motivated witch hunt or a sign Fauci has something to hide?

The Spin

Democratic narrative

The legal defense fund for Anthony Fauci is a direct response to a politically motivated witch hunt, not evidence of wrongdoing. Fauci spent nearly 40 years leading NIAID, advised seven presidents and helped guide the country through COVID-19 — and the investigations piling up against him remain unsubstantiated. Invoking the Fifth Amendment is a constitutional right, not an admission of guilt, and even Trump used it during a 2022 deposition.

Republican narrative

A legal defense fund doesn't get launched unless serious legal exposure exists, and Biden's pardon didn't stop states like Florida from opening their own investigations. If the COVID-19 response was fully above board, there'd be nothing to defend against. The sheer scale of resources needed here tells you everything about how much is actually at stake.
