A Seoul court on Friday sentenced former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol to 30 years in prison on charges of abuse of power and aiding the enemy, linked to drone incursions over Pyongyang in October 2024.

The Seoul Central District Court ruled that the October 2024 drone operation was aimed at provoking North Korea to create a pretext for Yoon's Dec. 3, 2024, martial law declaration, finding it was carried out for private political purposes unrelated to national security.

Former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun was also sentenced to 30 years in prison, while former Defense Counterintelligence Command head Yeo In-hyung received 15 years. Former Drone Operations Commander Kim Yong-dae received a three-year suspended sentence.

Yoon's legal team denied the charges, arguing he neither ordered nor approved the drone operation and that it was "a legitimate act of self-defense" in response to North Korea sending trash-carrying balloons across the border.

The court stated that the operation exposed South Korea's military assets and secrets to North Korea, strengthening the North's military readiness and making similar future operations more difficult. Prosecutors said the crashed drones may have revealed drone specifications and flight routes.

Friday's ruling is the latest in a series of convictions against Yoon. In February, a South Korean court sentenced him to life in prison for leading what the court characterized as an insurrection tied to his martial law declaration, a ruling he has appealed.
