Version 7.18.3
Arguments over the name of the EU-Canada relationship completely miss the point. At a time of global change, middle powers must come together to promote shared values and deepen economic and security ties, an ideal that both von der Leyen and Carney have shown intent for in spades. As the Montreal summit will show, "associate membership" hysteria will not stop both partners from forging deeper ties, no matter the official wording.
Announcing a new membership status on the world stage without asking the 27 governments that must approve it was an amateurish PR stunt gone wrong. A title with no legal meaning that only undermines the status of full members adds nothing to existing cooperation, while inviting division at a time where unity is needed. This disaster sits solely at the feet of von der Leyen, who must remember that her role is to represent, not circumvent, the bloc's wishes.
