The EU's Copernicus Climate Change Service said Thursday that August 2026 tied with July 2023 as the hottest month ever recorded globally, with an average surface air temperature of 16.96 degrees Celsius, or 1.65 C above pre-industrial levels.

It was the first month since November 2025 in which global temperatures exceeded 1.5 C above the 1850-1900 average, the threshold nearly 200 countries pledged to pursue under the 2015 Paris Agreement.
