Democrats Planning Trump Probes After Taking Congress
The Facts
- In the aftermath of the Democrats winning the majority in both the U.S. House and Senate, Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) posted "LAWYER UP" on X on Tuesday. Garcia, who could become chair of the House Oversight Committee, also said they plan to investigate what they call "grift" by President Donald Trump and his family.
- At a news conference Wednesday, Garcia said that the Oversight Committee will focus on four areas: the "Trump crime family," the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), corporate corruption and the Epstein files.
- Also, U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), who is expected to chair the Senate Finance Committee, wrote "Subpoenas" on X, and Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) said that new forests would be needed to print them. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said Wednesday that lowering costs comes first.

Voters delivered Democrats a mandate about gas prices, groceries and rent, not a two-year subpoena parade aimed at the president's staff. Trading an affordability agenda for impeachment theater is how a winning coalition gets squandered, since show trials never lowered a single grocery bill. Promising relief and delivering retribution earns exactly the backlash it deserves from Democratic voters.

Subpoena power exists for exactly this moment, when years of unchecked cronyism, self-dealing and abuse at the border have gone unexamined. Oversight is the constitutional job description, and sworn testimony is the only thing that turns stonewalling into answers. Letting corruption slide would be a betrayal of voters by Democrats.
