This presidential election presents a defining choice for Colombia. Voters can either choose to deepen four years of historic progressive governance or abandon hard-won social gains. With 14 candidates in the race and a likely June 21 runoff, the left must consolidate its base to ensure that the country will further reduce inequality and advance its energy transition. Abandoning this trajectory risks surrendering Colombia's social future to security-first, fossil-fuel-dependent conservatism.
Colombians must be aware that this election may well be Colombia's last free one if the left wins again. Those who have spent decades defending guerrilla criminals and undermining the rule of law are ready to replace democratic institutions with mob pressure on the streets, weaponize justice against political opponents and concentrate power in the hands of a movement aligned with the same armed groups that have terrorized Colombia for decades.
Democracy in Colombia will be under threat regardless of who wins the election. Due to algorithms, AI-generated content and hyper-personalized feeds, voters on opposing sides are no longer sharing the same political reality, shattering the common ground that democracy needs to function. As long as political conversations continue to resemble less a debate and more a war, no election result will reverse this worrisome trend.
