Canada is showing the world a third way to stand up to Trump. Stand firm without severing ties, reduce dependence without pretending America doesn't matter, and build strength through new partnerships. Carney has shown that Canada can defend its sovereignty without folding or blowing up the relationship. A durable deal that benefits both countries is still on the table, and thanks to Carney's strategic restraint, only on terms that work for Canada.
Carney's posturing is setting Canada up for a serious fall. President Trump has already warned that playing the anti-American card ends badly for Canadian politicians. Pivoting toward China as leverage is even worse, since Beijing's track record is economic blackmail, not partnership, and every concession to Xi hollows out Canadian industry. Canada already gets the best tariff treatment in the world, so manufacturing grievances to score political points is a losing bet.
