The Spin

Pro-Trump narrative

Canada blew a historic opportunity by walking away from a deal that offered real tariff reductions on steel, aluminum, autos and lumber. The U.S. put forward a generous, forward-looking partnership covering national security, critical minerals and supply chain coordination — and Canada responded with new demands and broken commitments. No country has gotten better access to American markets, and Canada chose retaliation over partnership.

Pro-government narrative

Canada didn't walk away — it just stood up to Trump. The U.S. blew up its own deal with last-minute changes that were unfair and economically indefensible. Mark Carney's negotiators worked in good faith right up to the final hour, but no responsible government signs an agreement when the other side keeps moving the goalposts. Matching the 50% tariffs dollar for dollar is the right call to protect Canadian workers and businesses.

Government-critical narrative

Canadians were sold Mark Carney as the economic heavyweight uniquely qualified to handle Trump. However, 18 months later, trade talks are suspended, negotiators have returned home, tariffs are rising, growth is weak and uncertainty persists. Trump deserves blame for starting the tariff war, but Carney promised better results. Canadians didn't elect a résumé. They elected a Prime Minister. Carney should resign.

Anti-Trump narrative

Washington blames Canada for walking away from trade talks, while Carney says the U.S. changed the terms at the last minute. Now 50% tariffs hit nearly $30 billion in Canadian goods, from lumber to hockey sticks. The White House forgot one inconvenient detail: American importers pay the tariffs, meaning U.S. builders, retailers and families ultimately face higher costs. Trump didn't just tariff Canada. He tariffed America.
