Cutting the GOC staff from 100 to 50 during one of the worst wildfire seasons in Canadian history was a serious mistake by Carney's government. Slashing the wildfire monitoring budget and terminating satellite contracts left Canada less equipped to respond when it mattered most. Showing up for a photo-op at the same center that was gutted is particularly damning optics. Trump was right about Canada being responsible for the fires.

Weakening the federal hub that coordinates emergency response puts frontline firefighters, evacuees and communities at greater risk, exposing misplaced priorities during a severe wildfire season.

Focusing on GOC staffing cuts ignores the broader picture. Carney's government has convened the Incident Response Group, is investing in a new state-of-the-art operations center, $257.6 million for waterbombers, nearly 300 aircraft deployed this wildfire season and renewed funding for the National Public Alerting System. That's a coordinated effort to strengthen Canada's wildfire response.
