Spain: Attorney General Resigns After Supreme Court Conviction

Spain's Attorney General Alvaro Garcia Ortiz resigned after the Supreme Court convicted him of leaking confidential tax information. A politically motivated attack by the judiciary, or proof that justice applies equally to all regardless of power?

The Spin

Pro-government narrative

The Attorney General’s conviction is nothing more than a politically motivated attack. Despite numerous credible journalists giving testimony in Garcia Ortiz's defense, the Supreme Court found him guilty regardless, and has yet to provide any proof. This outcome sends a dangerous message to Spain about the so-called independence and impartiality of its judiciary.

Government-critical narrative

Garcia Ortiz's conviction shows that no one, no matter how high, is above the law. A damning indictment of the government, it also exposes how far corruption has been allowed to permeate the political establishment under Sanchez's watch, as well as the radical left's outright hostility to the rule of law when they don't get their own way.
