German biathlete Laura Dahlmeier, 31, died Monday after being struck by falling rocks while climbing Laila Peak in Pakistan's Karakoram mountain range at approximately 5,700 meters (18,700 feet) altitude around noon local time.

Dahlmeier's climbing partner Marina Eva issued a distress signal and successfully descended to base camp Tuesday, while rescue helicopters were unable to reach the remote accident site until Tuesday morning due to poor weather conditions.
