According to Portuguese authorities, the operation stems from a European Investigation Order on behalf of the public prosecutor's office in the German city of Braunschweig, with all evidence seized to be handed over to Germany's Federal Criminal Police Office.

Some 30 German police officers, along with forensic experts and Portuguese officers, will look for any signs of Madeleine's body between the site of her disappearance and one of the houses where prime suspect Christian Brueckner lived at the time she went missing, 26 miles (42 kilometers) away.

Reports indicate that search teams will use ground-penetrating radar equipment to examine trenches, wells, ruins, and water tanks on privately-owned land covering some 120 acres. The last search for McCann had been carried out in May 2023.

Channel 4 and British tabloid The Sun claimed early last month to have gained access to a hard drive of pictures and children's clothes and toys, plus chemicals, guns and masks, that were found by chance at a disused factory bought by Brueckner in 2008.

Brueckner, a 48-year-old German national currently serving a seven-year prison sentence for raping a 72-year-old woman, is due to be released in September. Last October, he was acquitted in Germany over allegations of two sexual assaults and three rapes between 2000 and 2017 in Portugal.

Narrative A

It's very likely that this renewed search into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann — the first extensive one since 2008 — has been triggered by Brueckner disclosing more information in prison as authorities in Germany hope to find further reasons to keep him further in custody. Moreover, recent technological developments allow search teams to rely not only on criminological analysis, but also on AI-powered analysis.

Narrative B

It's certain that German authorities are rushing against the clock to prevent the looming release of Brueckner, but that may actually suggests that this search operation is a desperate attempt to find anything against him, rather than being triggered by fresh findings. So far, the only solid evidence against the suspect is a phone call he made on the night of McCann's disappearance in the resort she was staying at.
