The Spin

Pro-establishment narrative

Though the White House remains grateful for Budapest's continued support, Orbán must remember that American foreign policy does not depend on the whims of Hungary. Trump has provided Russia with endless opportunities to end the war in Ukraine — Orbán must instead convince Putin to come to the table with serious intent for peace in Europe.

Establishment-critical narrative

The imposition of further energy sanctions on Russia does little to halt Moscow's intent in Ukraine, harms relations between Washington and Moscow and damages the economy of a key intermediary and ally. Hungary must protect its economic security while ensuring that both Russia and the U.S. find the common ground required to end the bloodshed.
