Germany: Family Connection Suspected After Newly Elected Mayor Stabbed

  • A newly elected mayor of a west German town suffered multiple stab wounds, leaving her in critical condition, officials said on Tuesday.
  • Iris Stalzer, 57, is a member of the center-left Social Democratic Party — the junior party of Germany's coalition government with the Christian Democrats — and she was elected mayor of Herdecke with 52.2% of the vote in late September. Her term is set to start in the beginning of November.
  • Police said she was discovered with life-threatening injuries at her home in the town, located in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, at 12:40 p.m. local time. She was flown to hospital via helicopter.
