Bayrou's treatment during the Bétharram inquiry resembled a political witch hunt more than a quest for truth. The tone was accusatory, not investigative — closer to a show trial than a democratic hearing. Exploiting such a tragedy to tarnish reputations is unworthy of Parliament and does nothing to help victims of abuse. Justice deserves rigor, not spectacle or partisan settling of scores.
Bayrou’s hearing was a long-overdue reckoning. Faced with a scandal involving over 200 complaints, his refusal to acknowledge any responsibility as former education secretary is troubling. Even more alarming were his remarks downplaying the seriousness of a father hitting a child, calling it an “educational gesture.” In 2025, such justification is indefensible. Accountability isn’t persecution; it’s a democratic necessity.
