The Spin

Republican narrative

The federal government has clear legal authority to ensure states comply with election laws and maintain accurate voter rolls. When states refuse to provide legally required information about voter registration and list maintenance, they undermine election integrity and violate federal statutes designed to protect voting rights. The DOJ must verify that only eligible citizens are voting in federal elections.

Democratic narrative

Time and again during the Trump administration, the DOJ has taken steps to retaliate against the president's political opponents. This is another case of weaponizing the DOJ, despite similar resistance to these sorts of requests from Republican states. The administration is seeking sensitive personal data without adequate justification or privacy protections in violation of the states' constitutional authority over elections.
