The attack on the Atlanta CDC campus last Friday was a direct consequence of the climate of hostility created against public health workers by dangerous vaccine disinformation. The leadership of the CDC and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) must immediately condemn these falsehoods to prevent further violence against CDC scientists and employees.
This was a tragic crime that must be condemned, but it should not be used to conflate vaccine skepticism with violence or justify silencing dissent. Americans have a right to question public health policies, and protecting CDC employees can be achieved without stifling legitimate debate. Open dialogue, not censorship, is the best way to restore trust and prevent future unrest.
