The Spin

Left narrative

This development — allowing close non-household family members to visit him at his residence in Brasília without prior authorization — is a minor easing of the house arrest of far-right leader Jair Bolsonaro. What matters is that the measure remains in place to thwart once and for all Bolsonaro's attempts to generate internal and external pressure aimed at coercing the Supreme Court and obstructing justice.

Right narrative

This house arrest marks another escalation by the most powerful Supreme Court justice in Brazil and the country's de facto dictator in a bid to use Brazilian institutions to silence political dissent. Easing the terms of the measure doesn't change Moraes' self-destructive intent to provoke the Trump administration after being sanctioned under the Global Magnitsky Act.
