Australia Proposes University Funding Cuts Over Antisemitism

Australia's Special Envoy to Combat Antisemitism, Jillian Segal, released a comprehensive plan to tackle antisemitism on Thursday, following what was described at launch by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese as a "deeply troubling" rise in antisemitism in Australia.

The plan claims that Australia has reached a "tipping point that threatens social harmony, undermines trust in institutions, and marginalizes Jewish Australian citizens," noting that antisemitic incidents increased by 316% between October 2023 and September 2024.

To tackle this, the plan puts forward numerous "key actions," including using the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definition of antisemitism across government, screening visa applicants for antisemitic views, and monitoring media to "encourage accurate, fair and responsible reporting."

In particular, the plan introduces measures for universities and wider education, including a report card to assess each university's progress to tackle antisemitism, a commission of inquiry into on-campus antisemitism, and antisemitism education in national and state school curricula.

The recommendations also include pulling state funding for universities that "enable or fail to act against antisemitism." Segal, however, clarified in an interview with ABC that the policy would only be used as a "last resort."

Albanese welcomed the report and said the government would "carefully consider" its recommendations, noting some measures could be implemented quickly. In contrast, others would require long-term work with civil society at all levels.

Australia is in the midst of an antisemitic crisis, with reported incidents spiraling out of control. From Australia's universities to its streets, antisemitism has become increasingly normalized, making Jewish citizens feel unsafe. Segel's tough approach, therefore, is what Australia needs to protect vulnerable communities and drive this ancient hatred back to the fringes of society.

Government-critical narrative

This plan would fatally undermine Australia's academic freedom and democratic principles and, ultimately, inflame community tensions even further. Rather than combat hatred, this proposal would silence dissent by conflating criticism of Israel with antisemitism. The government should reject this plan and instead focus on pursuing a strategy that tackles racism in all its forms.
