Australia Fast-Tracks $1B in Defense Spending

Australia's Defense Minister Richard Marles announced on Monday an A$10.6B ($6.7B) increase in defense spending over the next four years. This includes bringing $1B forward from 2028-29 to accelerate military capabilities.

The accelerated funding will support three initiatives: preparing HMAS Stirling to host AUKUS submarine rotations by 2027, readying the Henderson Defence Precinct for the Submarine Rotational Force–West, and expediting the Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordnance enterprise.

Marles also announced that Australia received its first two High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems from Lockheed Martin, part of a 42-unit order, which Minister for Defense Industry Pat Conroy described as "a generational change in capability."

The announcements come amid US Pres. Donald Trump's calls for allies to boost defense spending and last month's circumnavigation of Australia by a Chinese naval fleet.

On Tuesday, the Australian government handed down its pre-election budget. Treasurer Jim Chalmers declared that Australian defense spending as a share of GDP would rise from 2% to 2.3% by the early 2030s.
