John Barnett, a 62-year-old former Boeing employee who previously raised safety concerns about the firm's production standards, died from an apparent "self-inflicted" wound on Saturday in South Carolina.

Barnett's lawyer, Brian Knowles, said he was found dead in his truck at a hotel from an "alleged" self-inflicted gunshot. He was on a break from depositions in a whistleblower lawsuit against Boeing at the time.

For seven years, until his retirement in 2017, Barnett worked as a quality control manager at Boeing's Charleston factory. Post-retirement, he sued the firm for allegedly denigrating his character and hampering his career progression because he had raised concerns about production.

In January 2024, Barnett warned of production flaws in Boeing's 737 Max and 787 Dreamliner models. A few days ago, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said 737 Max's production had failed 33 of 89 audits.

In 2019, he further alleged that Boeing workers had fitted substandard parts to aircraft, and claimed that issues with its oxygen systems could mean up to 25% of oxygen masks wouldn't work in an emergency.
