This scheme is a step in the right direction for the UK's plan to aid Ukrainian refugees. However, the program needs to be properly resourced and the NSPCC have raised concerns about the absence of mental health support for hosts and guests to manage trauma. Homes for Ukraine still needs refinement.
Homes for Ukraine risks putting more pressure on social services already swamped by asylum seekers. Encouraging refugees to come to the UK puts them at risk of abuse when they could be better placed to return to Ukraine after a temporary stay in frontline states like Poland and Romania, with UK support.
Regardless of one's position on what response to the refugee crisis is best, everyone can agree that the government's shifty and dishonest response so far has brought shame on the UK.
