US Senate Rejects Resolution Requiring Iran War Approval
The U.S. Senate voted 47-53 on Wednesday to reject a War Powers Resolution that would have required President Donald Trump to obtain congressional approval for continued military action against Iran. Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky was the only Republican to support the measure, while Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania was the only Democrat to oppose it.
The War Powers Resolution was introduced by Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia and invoked provisions of the 1973 War Powers Act. The measure would have directed Trump to cease military hostilities against Iran "unless explicitly authorized by a declaration of war or a specific authorization for use of military force."
Five Republicans previously voted to advance a separate war powers resolution focused on Venezuela, but at least two of those lawmakers indicated they would not support the Iran resolution. Senator Todd Young of Indiana stated that limiting the president's military options "could pose increased risks to American lives and interests."
Democratic narrative
Senate Republicans abandoned constitutional war powers to protect Trump's reckless Iran aggression. Unchecked presidential war-making authority will cost American lives and drain national resources. Congress must reclaim its responsibility before endless conflicts become the norm.
Republican narrative
Trump's decisive action against Iran prevented attacks on American troops and demonstrated necessary strength. The world's superpower cannot hesitate when protecting national security and American lives. Presidential leadership requires bold moves against adversaries threatening prosperity and safety.
Establishment-critical narrative
The long-term objective of the U.S. is to sustain global influence by dominating energy markets, thereby enabling leverage over rivals such as China. As the technological and AI competition intensifies, this is the only logical explanation for the Iran war; otherwise, it makes zero sense for American strategic interests.
Nerd narrative
There's a 13% chance that if there is an American AUMF or declaration of war against Iran before 2030, the U.S. will control Tehran within one year, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
China Sets Growth Target at 4.5-5%, Lowest Since 1991
China has announced an economic growth target of 4.5-5% for 2026, marking the first formal downgrade since 2023 and the lowest target since 1991. Premier Li Qiang presented the target to the National People's Congress on Thursday.
The announcement also set a budget deficit of around 4% of GDP for 2026, maintaining the level from 2025. China reportedly plans to issue 1.3 trillion yuan in ultra-long special treasury bonds for major national strategies and 4.4 trillion yuan in local government bonds.
China's defense budget will, however, increase 7% to more than $275 billion in 2026. The increase aligns with Beijing's goal to modernize its military by 2035 amid regional tensions, including over Taiwan.
Pro-China narrative
China's growth target reflects strategic wisdom and confidence in long-term development. The 4.5% range aligns perfectly with the nation's path toward becoming a mid-level developed country by 2035, while providing the flexibility required to navigate uncertainties and maintain high-quality growth over quick gains.
Anti-China narrative
China's lowered growth target exposes a structural crisis masked by export surges. The housing collapse, youth unemployment exceeding 16%, and shift from expansion to preservation signal an economy entering permanent stagnation, with demographics, debt and political rigidity making recovery impossible.
Nerd narrative
There is a 5% chance that China's GDP will overtake the U.S.'s before 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Lawsuit Claims Google Gemini Encouraged Man's Suicide
A lawsuit filed in California federal court on Wednesday alleges that Google's AI chatbot Gemini was responsible for 36-year-old Jonathan Gavalas death by suicide in October 2025. The complaint claims Gemini convinced Gavalas he was part of covert operations and ultimately encouraged him to take his own life.
According to the lawsuit, Gavalas began using Gemini in August 2025 for ordinary tasks, but his interactions changed after Google rolled out updates including Gemini Live, a voice-based feature with affective dialogue capability, and automatic persistent memory that allowed the system to recall past conversations.
Gemini is accused of sending Gavalas on real-world missions, including one called Operation Ghost Transit on Sept. 29, 2025, directing him to a storage facility near Miami International Airport armed with knives and tactical gear to intercept a truck and stage a catastrophic accident.
Pro-establishment narrative
AI companies take mental health safeguards seriously and invest significant resources in protecting vulnerable users. Gemini clarified it was AI and referred the individual to crisis hotlines multiple times, showing the efficacy of protocols designed to guide distressed users toward professional support. These tragic situations involve complex circumstances that require full context, not selective evidence.
Establishment-critical narrative
AI chatbots are unsafe products operating in a regulatory Wild West, with vulnerable people paying the ultimate price for corporate recklessness. These bots lack empathy, insight and moral reasoning, yet are rushed to market without adequate safeguards, leading to multiple suicide cases. Stricter regulation is desperately needed before more lives are lost.
Nerd narrative
There is a 30% chance that a federal law, regulation, or executive order mandating safety checks for AI models will be enacted, issue or adopted in the U.S. before Jan. 20, 2029, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Nepal: First Election Since Gen Z Uprising Sees 60% Turnout
Nepal's Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari has announced that, as per Election Commission estimates, voter turnout was approximately 60% for the House of Representatives election held on Thursday.
The election took place following youth-led protests in September 2025 that resulted in 77 deaths, many of them protesters allegedly shot by police. The demonstrations led to the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and the dissolution of parliament.
A total of 18,903,689 registered voters were eligible to participate in the election, an increase of 915,119 from the 2022 election. More than half of eligible voters were between the ages of 18 and 40.
Pro-government narrative
The House of Representatives election proceeded peacefully and successfully, demonstrating citizens' active participation and trust in the federal democratic republic. Government officials, security forces, political parties and voters all played crucial roles in making this democratic exercise a triumph that will resolve the country's adverse political situation.
Government-critical narrative
The 60% turnout is among the lowest in Nepal's polling history and falls far short of the enthusiasm expected after the Gen-Z uprising. Limited campaign time, apathetic voters unconvinced by new parties and 4 million disenfranchised overseas citizens reveal this election as more of a protest vote than a genuine democratic engagement.
Nerd narrative
There's a 67.7% chance that the Rastriya Swatantra Party will win the most seats in the 2026 Nepali House of Representatives election, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
UK: Home Office to Offer Failed Asylum Seekers £40K to Leave Voluntarily
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced a pilot scheme offering failed asylum-seeker families up to £40,000 to leave the U.K. voluntarily, with payments of £10,000 per person capped at four per family. The scheme targets approximately 150 families in taxpayer-funded accommodation.
Families contacted under the pilot have seven days to accept the offer, after which the Home Office will attempt forcible removal if they refuse. The government estimates the scheme could save £20 million if successful, with housing a family of three estimated to cost up to £158,000 annually.
Mahmood announced the government would consult on how to remove families with children who refuse to leave voluntarily "in a way that is humane and effective," including considering how force can be used against children during removal processes.
Pro-government narrative
Britain's asylum system has become unfair to taxpayers and working families. Failed asylum seekers cost £4 billion annually in hotel accommodation while 100,000 people remain in the system at public expense. Offering families to leave voluntarily represents massive savings compared to yearly hotel costs per family, allowing for more investment in the British public.
Left narrative
Temporary protection schemes harm refugees' physical and mental health. Evidence from Denmark shows deportation threats prevent people from achieving a "baseline of safety" needed to recover from trauma, while Australian studies link temporary visas to higher PTSD and depression rates. These policies push vulnerable families into poverty and homelessness rather than allowing them to rebuild their lives with dignity.
Right narrative
The idea that individuals who have smuggled themselves into the U.K. will be offered more than the average wage to leave the country using the taxpayer's money is a disgrace. Instead of fixing the problem at the source and immediately removing people who don't deserve to be in the U.K., the British state is financially rewarding those who cheat the system.
Nerd narrative
There is a 50% chance that Labour will reduce small boat crossings in the English Channel by at least 50% during the current parliamentary term, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Hall of Fame Coach Lou Holtz Dies at 89
Lou Holtz, the Hall of Fame college football coach, died at age 89 in Orlando, Florida, surrounded by family. Holtz compiled a 249-132-7 record over his 33-year head coaching career across six schools, including Notre Dame, Arkansas, South Carolina, NC State, Minnesota and William & Mary.
Holtz led Notre Dame to a perfect 12-0 season and national championship in 1988, defeating West Virginia 34-21 in the Fiesta Bowl. The championship remains Notre Dame's most recent football title, with Holtz compiling a 100-30-2 record during his 11 seasons with the Fighting Irish from 1986 to 1996.
The 1988 Notre Dame team defeated top-ranked Miami 31-30 in a game dubbed "Catholics vs. Convicts," breaking the Hurricanes' 36-game winning streak. The victory became one of college football's most iconic games, with Notre Dame moving from No. 4 to No. 2 in the AP Top 25 following the win.
Right narrative
Lou Holtz embodied American patriotism and unwavering faith, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and dedication that inspired countless individuals. His passionate commitment to securing the southern border reflected his deep sense of responsibility to the nation, while his warmth and positivity uplifted everyone fortunate enough to know him. He will be remembered not only for his achievements, but as a devoted man of faith and a unique presence in the lives of those who knew him.
Left narrative
Holtz's controversial political endorsements and inflammatory rhetoric tarnished his legacy, particularly his attacks on Joe Biden's faith and his insensitivity to the Black Lives Matter movement. His coaching career was marred by NCAA violations, lack of institutional control and questions about tolerating poor academics and steroid use. Former players felt betrayed by his divisive political stance, as some said the hero they once admired died before their eyes.
Israel Calls on Civilians to Flee All of South Lebanon, Beirut's Southern Suburbs
The Israeli military issued evacuation orders for all of Beirut's southern suburbs on Thursday, encompassing a 6-square-mile (15.5-square-km) densely populated residential area with hundreds of thousands of people. The evacuation order was unprecedented in scale and sparked a panicked exodus as residents fled north.
Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich stated that the southern suburbs "will look like Khan Younis," referencing a city in Gaza that was largely razed by Israeli military operations. The Lebanese Health Ministry reported at least 102 people have been killed and 638 wounded since Israel's renewed assault began on Monday in response to Hezbollah rocket fire.
Earlier, the Israeli military warned residents of more than 80 villages and towns in southern Lebanon to evacuate, instructing people not to return until further notice. Lebanese state media reported that Israeli forces entered the southern town of Khiam, roughly six kilometers from the border, marking their deepest advance since fighting began.
Pro-Israel narrative
Hezbollah dragged Lebanon into Iran's war by launching illegal attacks on Israel, forcing defensive operations to protect Israeli civilians. The terrorist group remains Tehran's puppet despite heavy losses, choosing to break the ceasefire and join Iran's assault. Israel must eliminate Hezbollah's command structure and weapons infrastructure to stop the Iranian proxy from threatening the region.
Anti-Israel narrative
Though Hezbollah has acted unilaterally without the approval of Lebanon's people, it is clear that Israel was planning a barbaric campaign on Lebanon before Hezbollah fired a single rocket. Forcing hundreds of thousands from their homes while promising to turn Beirut into another Gaza proves this is a campaign of destruction and ethnic cleansing. Furthermore, Israel seeks to tear apart Lebanon's social fabric, with Israel purposefully striking shelters for the displaced to stoke sectarian tensions.
Pro-Iran narrative
Hezbollah had no other choice but to strike Israel, as Israeli forces were already massing on the border in preparation for a ground invasion. What is most disappointing is that the Lebanese government, instead of supporting the resistance, is working alongside the occupiers and impeding Hezbollah's movements. Everyone knows that the Lebanese army, which is dependent on the U.S., will never be able to protect Lebanon from Israeli aggression, and only Hezbollah can liberate the south.
Trump, Bondi Sued Over TikTok Deal Approval
U.S. President Donald Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi were sued Thursday over the government's approval last September of a deal by TikTok's Chinese owner ByteDance to establish a majority American-owned joint venture. The lawsuit calls for a renegotiation “that doesn't put administration allies in a position to censor political content.”
The suit was filed in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia by the Public Integrity Project on behalf of two retail U.S. investors in other social media firms. The plaintiffs are Zhaocheng Anthony Tan, a shareholder in Alphabet Inc., and Garrett Reid, a shareholder in Meta Platforms Inc.
Congress passed legislation in April 2024 requiring ByteDance to sell its U.S. assets by January 2025 or face a ban. Trump issued a series of executive orders extending the deadline for enforcement, and the Justice Department (DOJ) informed companies they would not face liability for continuing to host TikTok.
Anti-Trump narrative
The TikTok deal is a clear case of crony capitalism. Trump approved an illegal sale that violates the 2024 law’s ban on operational ties with ByteDance, allowing the Chinese company to retain control of the algorithm, e-commerce operations and board seats. Meanwhile, his allies bought the company at a fraction of its value, personally enriching him with billions in cryptocurrency and campaign donations. The deal must be renegotiated to remove foreign influence and prevent allies from controlling or censoring U.S. TikTok content.
Pro-Trump narrative
The TikTok divestiture framework fully complies with the 2024 Act while protecting national security and free speech for 170 million Americans. The qualified divestiture removes foreign adversary control by ensuring U.S. ownership exceeds 80%, stores sensitive data domestically with trusted security partners monitoring all operations, and prevents China from exploiting the platform to collect Americans' personal information for intelligence operations and blackmail. The current deal is a win-win for security and accessibility.
Trump Replaces Noem With Mullin as Homeland Security Chief
President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he was removing Kristi Noem as Department of Homeland Security Secretary and replacing her with Senator Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma, effective March 31.
Noem will be reassigned as Special Envoy for The Shield of the Americas, a new security initiative for the Western Hemisphere that Trump said would be announced on Saturday in Doral, Fla.
Mullin has served 10 years in the House of Representatives and 3 years in the Senate representing Oklahoma. Trump described him as a "MAGA Warrior" and noted he is the only Native American currently serving in the Senate.
Pro-Trump narrative
Noem delivered spectacular results at the border and earned a promotion to lead the Shield of the Americas initiative, but accusations of personal controversies, whether they're fair or not, have become a burden on the important work that DHS must get done. Mullin, a fresh face with a proven MAGA track record, will bring the courage and wisdom needed to advance border security and stop illegal drugs from flooding America.
Anti-Trump narrative
Noem's disastrous mismanagement finally caught up with her after she lied under oath about a self-promotional ad campaign and presided over systematic violations of federal court orders. Mullin isn't even legally eligible to serve as acting secretary and has zero military experience despite romanticizing war. Trump, who stands responsible for everything that goes on in his government, has replaced one unqualified appointee with another.
