5 Dead in US Strikes on Alleged Drug Vessels Off Colombia's Pacific Coast
U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced in two posts on X on Wednesday that his department, at Trump's direction, conducted strikes on alleged narco-trafficking vessels operated by a Designated Terrorist Organization. According to Hegseth, two were killed in a strike on Tuesday, and three on Wednesday.
These mark the first known U.S. strikes in the Pacific Ocean under the Trump administration's "non-international armed conflict" with drug cartels. According to CBS News, a Pentagon official confirmed that the vessels were in international waters off Colombia.
The U.S. has carried out eight strikes on alleged drug-carrying vessels since Sept. 2, with all previous strikes carried out in the Caribbean Sea, and only one of them in international waters off Colombia.
Pro-Trump narrative
Trump's military strikes against drug boats are exactly the kind of bold action needed to protect American lives from narco-terrorists poisoning communities. These targeted operations eliminate confirmed traffickers operating along known smuggling routes with intelligence-verified cargo. Traditional law enforcement approaches have clearly failed to stop this carnage.
Anti-Trump narrative
These boat bombings on drug suspects in international waters amount to extrajudicial executions, killing innocent fishermen like Alejandro Carranza. It's no coincidence that vessels off Colombia have been targeted as Trump clashes with Petro — this is a politically motivated military campaign against Trump's rivals disguised as an anti-drug effort.

Study: Ozempic Cuts Heart Disease Risk by 20% Regardless of Weight Loss
A study of over 17,604 people aged 45 and over has found that semaglutide, the active ingredient in Wegovy and Ozempic, reduced the risk of major cardiac events by 20% regardless of whether participants lose weight or the amount of weight they lose during treatment.
Researchers discovered that people with a BMI of 27 — the average for UK adults, which classifies them as overweight but not obese — experienced similar cardiovascular benefits as those with the highest BMI scores in the severely obese category.
The study found that shrinking waist circumference accounted for approximately one-third of semaglutide's cardiovascular benefits, while the remaining two-thirds of the heart health improvements remain unexplained by current medical understanding.
Narrative A
GLP-1 drugs represent a revolutionary breakthrough that transforms obesity treatment and delivers extraordinary health benefits beyond weight loss. These medications reduce risks of dementia, addiction, heart disease, and dozens of other conditions by 20%, offering hope for previously untreatable diseases. The drugs energize medical research and prove obesity is a biological condition requiring chronic treatment.
Narrative B
GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic aren't miracle cures and come with serious risks that outweigh their modest benefits. These medications cause dangerous complications including pancreatitis, kidney problems, and semi-starvation states where patients eat as few as 600 calories daily. Most people regain 70% of lost weight after stopping, making them ineffective long-term solutions to obesity and associated conditions.
Nerd narrative
There's a 32% chance that any OECD country will achieve a 10% or greater reduction in the national rate of obesity for three consecutive years before 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
US Sanctions Russian Oil Giants Rosneft, Lukoil
The U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions on Russia's two largest oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil, on Wednesday, marking the first sanctions against Russia since U.S. President Trump returned to office, according to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
Bessent said the major Russian companies were targeted for funding the Kremlin's "war machine" and called for an end to the Ukraine war, adding that the U.S. administration is "prepared to take further action if necessary" should Russia continue to refuse an immediate ceasefire.
Commenting on the new sanctions on Wednesday, Trump said he "just felt it was time." The sanctions came one day after Trump canceled a planned summit with Russian President Putin in Hungary, citing Russia's refusal to freeze the Ukraine war at the current front lines.
Pro-Russia narrative
The latest U.S. sanctions against Rosneft and Lukoil expose not Russian weakness, but Western desperation. The U.S. administration weaponizes finance to prop up its fading dominance, while Brussels, a mere vassal for Washington, obediently follows with its own sanctions at its own economic cost. These measures will hurt European industries, inflate global energy prices, and push Asia, Africa, and Latin America closer to Moscow and Beijing.
Anti-Russia narrative
The new sanctions against Rosneft and Lukoil mark a decisive step toward dismantling the Russian regime's war economy. By targeting the oil revenues that bankroll the Kremlin’s aggression against Ukraine, the free world led by Washington has finally struck at the heart of Putin’s power. For too long, loopholes and lobbying weakened previous measures. This time, coordinated Western action shows that war crimes and economic blackmail will carry real consequences for Moscow.
Nerd narrative
There's a 60% chance that the U.S. will import any crude oil from Russia between 2025 and 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
New Zealand: Over 100K Public Workers Strike in Largest Labor Action Since 1979
More than 100,000 public sector workers across New Zealand participated in a nationwide strike on Wednesday, including approximately 40,000 nurses and salaried medical personnel, 60,000 teachers, 4,000 senior doctors and 15,000 public service staff.
The strike action followed stalled collective bargaining negotiations, with unions rejecting government wage offers of approximately 2% annually while inflation stands at 3% and food costs have risen 4.6%.
Public Service Minister Judith Collins described the strike as unfair and politically motivated, stating it would harm thousands of patients and students, while unions argued they were defending essential public services.
Pro-government narrative
This strike is a selfish stunt that hurts the very people public workers claim to serve. The government has made generous offers — 76% of secondary teachers earn over NZ$100,000 ($57,425) and nurses average NZ$125,662 ($72,160) with benefits. Instead of negotiating in good faith, unions chose disruption over dialogue, forcing surgery cancellations and school closures right before crucial exams.
Opposition narrative
This historic strike by 110,000 workers exposes the government's relentless assault on public services through below-inflation wage cuts. With 65% public support, workers are fighting desperately against understaffed hospitals and under-resourced schools that endanger lives and education. The real issue isn't worker greed — it's a system prioritizing corporate profits over essential services.
Washington Hosts Third DRC-Rwanda Meeting
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda held their third Joint Security Coordination Mechanism (JSCM) meeting on Oct. 21-22 in Washington, D.C. aimed at implementing a peace agreement signed on June 27 under the mediation of the U.S., Qatar and the African Union.
Under the framework, both parties agreed to implement a Concept of Operations to neutralize the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), a Rwandan Hutu rebel group active in eastern DRC, and the gradual lifting of Rwanda’s so-called "defensive measures."
In a joint statement, the JSCM members said they reviewed progress achieved since earlier sessions held in September and early October, particularly under Phase 1 of the Operations Order (OPORD), which focuses on threat analysis, intelligence sharing, and operational readiness.
Pro-Trump narrative
There is still a long way to go to achieve lasting peace, but Trump's diplomatic breakthrough in brokering the peace deal between Rwanda and Congo shows the genuine American leadership in ending Africa's longest conflicts. His transparent approach to securing critical minerals while promoting peace resonates with African leaders who value honest transactional politics over contradictory rhetoric. The administration's success in persuading both foreign ministers to sign this historic agreement positions America as a credible peacemaker across the continent.
Anti-Trump narrative
The Trump administration portrays itself as a champion of peace, but this peace deal is nothing more than a cynical move to secure access to Congo's $24 trillion worth of mineral resources while legitimizing decades of Rwandan aggression. America plays a key role in laundering illegally smuggled Congolese minerals, with Rwanda's tantalum exports to the US increasing fold after the M23 invasion. This sham agreement rewards Rwanda's plundering, while over 1,000 civilians have been killed since the deal was signed. This way, lasting peace remains an illusion.
Nerd narrative
There is a 60% chance that the Democratic Republic of Congo will experience a civil war before 2036, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
King Charles, Pope Leo XIV Hold Prayer Service in 500-Year First
King Charles III and Queen Camilla arrived in Rome for a state visit to the Vatican on Thursday, where they met Pope Leo XIV for the first time since his election in May 2025.
The King participated in an ecumenical prayer service in the Sistine Chapel alongside Pope Leo XIV, marking the first time since the 16th century Reformation that heads of the two Christian churches have prayed together publicly.
During the Vatican visit, King Charles received the title of Royal Confrater at the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, while a permanent throne bearing his coat of arms was installed for use by future British sovereigns visiting the site.
Pro-establishment narrative
This historic prayer service represents a wonderful gesture of Christian unity between two major church leaders. King Charles embodies earnest Christian humanity in his pursuit of duty, displaying the three-dimensional character modern monarchy requires. The union of these church heads coming together inspires understanding of fundamental faith values, and their joining in prayer marks good diplomacy, rather than religious radicalism.
Establishment-critical narrative
King Charles has betrayed his Protestant coronation oath by worshipping with the Pope, denying the finality of Christ's sacrifice through the Catholic Mass. The special papal title and permanent throne bearing his coat of arms signal a dangerous reversal of the Reformation. In the midst of the continued Prince Andrew scandal, Charles has chosen a photo opportunity above adhering to his faith.
Nerd narrative
There is a 50% chance that Pope Leo XIV will cease to be pope by July 2041, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
NYC Mayoral Candidates Clash in Final Debate
The three leading candidates for New York City mayor participated in their final debate on Wednesday night, with Democrat Zohran Mamdani, independent Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa trading exchanges in a university auditorium packed with supporters and spectators.
During the debate, Mamdani confronted Cuomo about sexual harassment allegations, noting that accuser Charlotte Bennett was in the audience and asking what he would say to the 13 women who accused him, while Cuomo dismissed the question, saying "I’m not sure what the man said."
On housing policy, Mamdani didn't take a position on certain ballot measures, prompting Cuomo to respond with a talking hands gesture and Sliwa to tell him not to be a politician. However, Mamdani did pledge to both "freeze" rent and support landlords.
Pro-establishment narrative
Mamdani, whose fame came from those who support antisemitism, got exposed as an inexperienced politician who crumbles under pressure during the final debate. His evasive answers on key ballot initiatives and visible nervousness when confronted about his extremist associations prove he's not ready to lead. Cuomo dominated the stage, showing that Mamdani lacks the experience needed for City Hall.
Establishment-critical narrative
Zohran Mamdani's laser focus on affordability makes him the clear choice for mayor. While other politicians get distracted by foreign policy theatrics, Mamdani consistently turns every issue back to the cost-of-living crisis crushing New York families. His message, discipline and ability to connect rising costs to failed establishment policies show he understands what voters actually care about.
Cynical narrative
New York's powerbrokers, Democrats and Republicans, have paved the way for Mamdani's rise by backing flawed figures like Cuomo and Adams. Their failure to offer credible, inspiring candidates — choosing instead a corrupt establishment — has left voters disillusioned. By prioritizing power over principle, they've created a vacuum where Mamdani, whether he's a good choice or not, has connected with New Yorkers more than the supposed experienced men in the room.
Nerd narrative
There's a 50% chance that Zohran Mamdani will win the NYC mayoral election by at least 14.8 percentage points, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
NBA's Billups, Rozier Among More Than 30 Arrested in FBI Gambling Probe
Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier were arrested Thursday as part of an FBI investigation spanning 11 states that resulted in more than 30 arrests related to alleged illegal gambling operations.
The FBI investigation involved two separate operations. Billups was charged in connection with rigged poker games linked to organized crime families, while Rozier faces charges related to sports betting schemes using insider NBA information.
Federal prosecutors allege the poker scheme used high-tech cheating equipment, including X-ray tables, rigged shuffling machines and special contact lenses to defraud victims of millions of dollars in underground games.
Pro-establishment narrative
The FBI successfully dismantled a massive multi-million dollar gambling ring connected to organized crime that corrupted professional basketball for years. Law enforcement followed the money trail, exposed systematic sports rigging and money laundering and brought down a criminal enterprise that threatened the integrity of professional sports.
Establishment-critical narrative
The FBI orchestrated a shameful publicity stunt by arresting Terry Rozier in a 6 a.m. perp walk instead of allowing him to surrender, prioritizing headlines over justice. The NBA already cleared Rozier of wrongdoing after investigating the same allegations. Federal prosecutors are relying on unreliable sources rather than solid evidence to revive a dead case.
Narrative C
Today's revelations expose the dark underbelly of illegal gambling, a predatory network exploiting the vulnerable. In contrast, the legal market stands for transparency, accountability and cooperation with authorities, helping expose and eliminate bad actors. The legal betting industry is committed to collaborating and protecting the trust in fair play.
Narrative D
Sports betting platforms have transformed both real and fantasy sports into a high-stakes gambling environment. Studies link participation to increased gambling problems, especially among college students. Despite industry claims of skill-based play, the rapid growth and addictive features raise concerns about the true cost of sports betting.
Nerd narrative
There's a 60% chance that at least one All-Star from the NFL, NBA, MLB or NHL will be banned or suspended for sports betting before 2026, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
ICJ: Israel Must Allow UNRWA, Other UN Agencies to Operate in Gaza
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued an advisory opinion on Wednesday ruling that Israel must ensure the basic needs of Gaza's civilian population and allow U.N. agencies, including the UNRWA, to operate in the strip. The ruling is nonbinding.
Israel said that the ICJ's opinion was "political." Israel has alleged that the UNRWA, the U.N.'s primary agency for Palestinian refugees, has been infiltrated by Hamas and banned the agency from operating in Israel, Gaza, East Jerusalem and the West Bank last year.
The U.N. said last year that nine UNRWA staff members may have been involved in Hamas' Oct. 7, 2023 attack on Israel and had been fired. The UNRWA has around 13,000 employees in Gaza. The UNRWA said that 380 workers have been killed in Gaza since the war began.
Pro-establishment narrative
Though the ICJ's opinion is nonbinding, it sets an important precedent. Israel, of course, has valid concerns regarding the UNRWA, but this does not mean that it can deny aid to Palestinians in Gaza, who must be protected.
Pro-Israel narrative
UNRWA has long facilitated terror and provided cover for Hamas and Islamic Jihad. Several UNRWA employees participated in Hamas' Oct. 7 terrorist massacre, which should be more than enough of a reason to once and for all get rid of the terror-adjacent organization. The ICJ's opinion is irrelevant to Israeli policy and is the product of the clear bias against Israel in international institutions.
Pro-Palestine narrative
Besides the fact that Israeli accusations against UNRWA are fully baseless, the agency is quite literally the only international organization with the infrastructure capable of providing humanitarian aid in Gaza. Considering that almost all of the donor countries — most of whom being allies of Israel — have reinstated funding to the agency should indicate that Israeli claims are nonsense. Attacks on UNRWA only serve to make the humanitarian situation in Gaza worse.
Nerd narrative
There's a 95% chance that the current ceasefire declared between Israel and Hamas will hold by Oct. 28, 2025, at 12 p.m., according to the Metaculus prediction community.
