ABC Suspends Jimmy Kimmel Show Over Charlie Kirk Comments

The Facts

  • ABC announced on Wednesday that it would indefinitely suspend "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" following the host's comments on Monday about Charlie Kirk's assassination. The decision comes hours after FCC Chairman Brendan Carr threatened regulatory action against the network.

  • During his Monday monologue, Kimmel stated, "We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it."

  • Carr told conservative podcaster Benny Johnson that broadcasters have an obligation "to operate in the public interest" and warned that "companies can find ways to take action on Kimmel or there is going to be additional work for the FCC ahead."

The Spin

Republican narrative

The FCC's intervention is a necessary oversight of broadcast networks that have abandoned their public interest obligations. Late-night shows have transformed from comedy into partisan political activism, alienating broad audiences while pushing narrow ideological agendas. Broadcasters acted appropriately by refusing to carry content that doesn't serve their communities' values and interests.

Democratic narrative

This suspension amounts to government censorship and an unprecedented attack on free speech by the Trump administration. The sequence of events — from FCC threats to immediate network capitulation — mirrors authoritarian tactics used to silence critics and represents a grave threat to First Amendment freedoms that should alarm all Americans regardless of political affiliation.

Nerd narrative

There's a 75% chance that the White House will revoke the media credentials of reporters from two media outlets before 2026, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Trump Announces Intent to Designate Antifa a Terrorist Organization

The Facts

  • U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he plans to designate antifa as a major terrorist organization, making the announcement on Truth Social shortly before 1:30 a.m. Thursday local time while on a state visit to the United Kingdom.

  • Antifa, short for anti-fascists, is an umbrella term for far-left-leaning militant groups that resist fascists and neo-Nazis at demonstrations and is not a singular entity with a clear hierarchical structure or designated leadership.

  • Trump said he will strongly recommend that those funding antifa be investigated in accordance with the highest legal standards and practices, and suggested his administration would pursue RICO charges against major funders.

The Spin

Pro-Trump narrative

President Trump is absolutely right to brand Antifa as domestic terrorists. Their masked mobs hijack legitimate causes to unleash chaos — torching cities, ambushing police, and terrorizing communities. While the SPLC excuses their violence, Americans see the truth Antifa is organized anarchy. Justice demands they be treated as the extremists they are.

Anti-Trump narrative

Trump’s bid to brand Antifa as terrorists is an authoritarian ploy, not a legal act. Antifa is not an organization but a loose anti-fascist movement opposing white supremacy — the real domestic terror threat. By abusing the “terrorism” label, Trump tramples constitutional rights, demonizes dissent, and accelerates America’s march toward neofascism under the guise of law and order.

Nerd narrative

There is a 45% chance that over half of U.S. states will forbid affirmative action before 2035, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Australia Sets 2035 Climate Target at 62-70% Emissions Cut

The Facts

  • The Australian government announced on Thursday a new 2035 emissions reduction target of 62-70% below 2005 levels, based on independent advice from the Climate Change Authority (CCA), which considered over 500 submissions and conducted more than 560 meetings.

  • Prime Minister Anthony Albanese accepted the CCA’s recommendation after meetings with Cabinet and the Parliamentary Labor Party Caucus, and described the target as responsible, backed by science and achievable with proven technology.

  • In its report, the CCA stated that requirements for the target include halving current emissions levels, doubling Australia’s decarbonisation rate, quadrupling wind capacity, tripling large-scale solar and ensuring electric vehicles account for half of new car sales between now and 2035.

The Spin

Pro-government narrative

This new climate target strikes a balance between Australia’s maximum achievable goals and the need for economic growth and job creation. As the CCA’s analysis has shown, any target above 70% emissions reduction is simply unfeasible with current technology and practices. The government, therefore, strives to tackle climate change where it can while building a prosperous economy in the process.

Australian Green Party narrative

Labor’s weak climate target abandons science and sells out future generations to appease fossil fuel interests. While climate experts demanded at least a 75% reduction to align Australia with global 1.5°C warming targets, Labor has chosen the bare minimum to protect their coal and gas donors. The Australian Greens will continue to hold the government accountable and advocate for effective climate policies.

Liberal/National Coalition narrative

Labor’s latest announcement shows that the government is living in fantasy land concerning its climate targets. The new policies fail when examined for their cost and credibility, and would be impossible to achieve by 2035. The Coalition will fight to protect hard-working Australian families and businesses, who are already suffering from Labor’s dysfunctional energy policy, from this policy madness.

Nerd narrative

There's a 50% chance that Australia will have no coal-fired power plants in its National Electricity Market by November 2039, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Saudi Arabia, Pakistan Sign Mutual Defense Pact

The Facts

  • Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif signed a Strategic Mutual Defense Agreement on Sept. 17, 2025, during Sharif's state visit to Riyadh at Al-Yamamah Palace.

  • The agreement stipulates that any aggression against either Saudi Arabia or Pakistan shall be considered an aggression against both countries, formalizing decades of military and security cooperation between the nations.

  • The defense pact builds on a historic partnership extending nearly eight decades between the two countries, grounded in bonds of brotherhood, Islamic solidarity and shared strategic interests according to joint statements.

The Spin

Narrative A

The Saudi–Pakistan defense pact is a historic milestone, binding two trusted allies into a single shield against aggression. It honors decades of brotherhood, amplifies Pakistan’s military stature, and signals a new regional order where Muslim powers unite for collective security. This bold commitment promises not only deterrence, but also stability, strength, and prosperity.

Narrative B

Pakistan’s defense pact with Saudi Arabia looks less like strategic triumph and more like desperate bargaining. With its economy in free fall and elites begging Riyadh for bailouts, Islamabad is trading soldiers for survival. Saudi Arabia, shifting away from unconditional aid, now tightens the leash — while Pakistan risks entanglement in Gulf rivalries it can scarcely afford.

Nerd narrative

There is a 50% chance that at least 2.78% of world GDP will be spent on military expenses in 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Flying Cars Collide Mid-Air During China Airshow Rehearsal

The Facts

  • Two electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) vehicles manufactured by Xpeng Aeroht collided during a rehearsal for the Changchun Air Show in northeastern China's Jilin Province on Tuesday afternoon.

  • The collision reportedly occurred due to insufficient spacing between the aircraft while they were performing formation flight maneuvers, according to statements released by the company following the incident.

  • One vehicle landed safely after the collision, while the second aircraft sustained fuselage damage and caught fire upon landing, requiring emergency response from fire trucks and ambulances at the scene.

The Spin

Techno-skeptic narrative

This crash exposes the premature rush to commercialize flying car technology before adequate safety protocols are established. The collision during a simple formation flight demonstrates that these vehicles aren't ready for public use, let alone mass production by 2026 as promised.

Techno-optimist narrative

One isolated incident during high-difficulty stunt maneuvers shouldn't overshadow the tremendous progress in eVTOL technology and China's leadership in the growing low-altitude economic sector. The quick emergency response and minimal injuries prove that safety systems work effectively.

Nerd narrative

There's a 50% chance that autonomous flying vehicles will be commercially available by July 2035, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

US Department of Education Launches 'America 250 Civics Coalition'

The Facts

  • The U.S. Department of Education on Wednesday launched the America 250 Civics Coalition, partnering with more than 40 conservative groups to design civics programming tied to the nation's 250th anniversary in 2026.

  • "On the 238th anniversary of the U.S. Constitution, we're reminded that freedom depends on citizens who know their rights," Education Secretary Linda McMahon said, announcing "patriotic education" as her fifth supplemental priority for competitive grants.

  • The new coalition will be overseen by the Education Department and led by the America First Policy Institute, with members including Turning Point USA, the Heritage Foundation and PragerU.

The Spin

Republican narrative

America's students deserve an education that celebrates the exceptional principles and achievements that built a great nation. Schools have been infected with divisive ideologies that teach children to be ashamed of their country rather than proud of its founding ideals and remarkable progress toward equality. This patriotic education initiative will restore proper civic knowledge and inspire the next generation to understand America's unique role in advancing liberty and justice throughout history.

Democratic narrative

This administration is weaponizing education funding to push a sanitized version of American history that ignores systemic injustices and difficult truths. By partnering exclusively with conservative groups and political allies like Turning Point USA and the Heritage Foundation, the government risks transforming classrooms into propaganda platforms that present a selective narrative designed to serve partisan political goals rather than comprehensive historical understanding.

Nerd narrative

There's a 9% chance that the United States will disband the Department of Education through an act of Congress before 2027, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

UK: Three Arrested in Essex on Suspicion of Spying for Russia

The Facts

  • Three people were arrested in Essex on Wednesday on suspicion of assisting a foreign intelligence service under section 3 of the National Security Act 2023, with allegations relating to Russia.

  • A 41-year-old man and 35-year-old woman were arrested at one address in Grays, Essex, while a 46-year-old man was arrested at a separate address in the same area before being taken to London.

  • Commander Dominic Murphy of the Met's Counter Terrorism Command claimed that authorities were seeing an increasing number of proxies being recruited by foreign intelligence services.

The Spin

Anti-Russia narrative

Recent arrests in Essex expose Russia's brazen espionage network operating on British soil. Putin's regime, frustrated by military failures in Ukraine, increasingly relies on criminal proxies to conduct sabotage and intelligence gathering across the West. These dangerous operations threaten national security, democracy and citizens' safety all while undermining international law.

Pro-Russia narrative

The Essex arrests expose Britain's hypocrisy. While accusing Russia of espionage, London orchestrates dangerous provocations worldwide. British intelligence uses foreign proxies for false flag operations, manipulates international incidents and employs centuries-old subversion tactics through NGOs and cultural programs. Who's really destabilizing global security?

Nerd narrative

There is a 10% chance that there will a direct conflict between Russia and any NATO state before 2027, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Google’s Deep Think Wins Gold at 'Coding Olympics'

The Facts

  • An advanced version of Google Gemini 2.5 Deep Think solved 10 out of 12 problems at the 2025 International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) World Finals in Azerbaijan, winning a gold medal and ranking second overall among 139 competing university teams.

  • The ICPC is considered the world’s most prestigious algorithmic programming competition at the college level, with teams from over 3,400 universities across 103 countries competing in its latest edition.

  • Gemini 2.5 Deep Think competed remotely, following ICPC rules, and solved eight problems within 45 minutes, and completed two more within three hours, for a combined total time of 677 minutes.

The Spin

Techno-optimist narrative

These AI victories represent a transformative leap toward artificial general intelligence that will revolutionize scientific and engineering disciplines. The genuine creativity and abstract reasoning demonstrated by these models prove that AI can serve as a true problem-solving partner for programmers and researchers.

Techno-skeptic narrative

Although AI is a powerful tool, which demonstrated its prowess at ICPC 2025, those who wield it must remember that it cannot solve every problem the world currently faces. Many of these issues are fundamentally man-made and require human-led solutions — responses crafted through empathy, creativity and engineering — that AI will never be able to replicate.

Nerd narrative

There's a 50% chance that we will have transformative AI by December 2040, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Anti-Austerity Strikes and Protests Disrupt France

The Facts

  • Protesters took to the streets across France in a day of nationwide disruption against proposed government budget cuts on Thursday, marking the largest union-led demonstrations in the country since 2023.

  • Strikes and protests affected public transport and medical services, and pharmacies and schools were also closed. More than 250 demonstrations took place nationwide, with marches in cities including Paris and Marseille.

  • Demonstrators and riot police had sporadic clashes across the country, with police firing tear gas as protesters targeted them with projectiles. Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau updated the number of arrests to 309, from an initial reported figure of 181, with 134 still in custody.

The Spin

Pro-government narrative

There are indeed legitimate reasons for anger but not for violence and radicalism, especially as France cannot afford another government collapse and its disastrous implications for the French people. Now is the time for dialogue and negotiations to craft the best possible budget that France's hung legislature can approve. Otherwise, the country's crises will only worsen.

Left narrative

Working people in France refuse to bear the burden of the fiscal crisis while the wealthy escape responsibility. Budget cuts would devastate public services, freeze welfare payments and force ordinary citizens to pay for a debt crisis caused by years of tax breaks for businesses and the rich. France needs higher taxes on the ultra-wealthy and corporations — not neoliberal austerity measures that will only deepen inequality and harm those who can least afford it.

Right narrative

While protesters block everything and destroy property, there remains a France that works hard, gets up early, and pays its taxes — this silent majority deserves protection from the chaos. These strikes hold daily life hostage and prevent law-abiding citizens from going about their business, with radical elements promoting violence and disorder. The focus should be on parliamentary solutions rather than street disruption that damages the economy and public order.

Nerd narrative

There's a 40% chance that French President Emmanuel Macron will call another snap legislative election before 2026, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Immigration Judge Orders Mahmoud Khalil's Deportation

The Facts

  • Mahmoud Khalil was ordered by a judge to be deported to Algeria or Syria in a ruling that came to light Wednesday after being issued last week.

  • The judge ruled that Khalil "willfully misrepresented" crucial facts on his green card application by failing to disclose his involvement with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees and Columbia University Apartheid Divest on his permanent residency application.

  • Khalil, a Syrian-born Algerian citizen and former Columbia University graduate student, was initially arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in March and detained for three months in Louisiana before being released in June. He's married to a U.S. citizen and has a newborn son who was born while he was in federal custody.

The Spin

Republican narrative

The Trump administration is carrying out vital enforcement of immigration law against someone who deliberately deceived federal authorities. Khalil willfully misrepresented himself on his green card application. This wasn't an innocent oversight but intentional fraud by an antisemitic agitator who's motivated to do the United States harm.

Democratic narrative

The Trump administration has continued weaponizing the immigration system to silence constitutionally protected political speech and retaliate against pro-Palestinian advocacy. These charges against Khalil are pretextual and were only added after the original deportation justification failed in federal court. Khalil has also been denied due process.
