Social media platform X says that it has blocked over 8,000 accounts at the behest of the Indian government, including many that belong to news organizations and what the platform describes as "prominent X users."
The moves come amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan and follow other actions to restrict social media in India, which included the Instagram account of former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan and several Pakistani YouTube channels, among others.
The official account for X's Global and Government Affairs said that India had not consistently specified which laws were alleged to have been broken by affected accounts and called the move "censorship."
