Israel's Parliament Dissolves, Sets 5th Election in 4 Years
Israel's Parliament on Thurs. unanimously approved its dissolution, ending PM Naftali Bennett's term and triggering new elections, which are set to be held on Nov. 1.
This marks the end of a governing coalition that comprised eight parties including right-wing, centrist, liberal, and a Palestinian party. It took power in June 2021 after a period of political impasse led to four elections in two years.
It has fallen apart after failing to pass a bill to renew Israel's West Bank settlers special legal status. The dissolution of the Knesset was decided due to security reasons as it will allow the settler law to remain in effect beyond its expiration date.
Narrative A
Though Israel could overcome this chaos with a unified government, this won't be achieved while Netanyahu leads the Likud. His strategies show that he wants to destabilize the government for his own political advantage.
Narrative B
Netanyahu's chances of returning to power seem better by the day as the public is fed up with the government's continued deadlock and inaction. He's the only one that can solve this political crisis and form a stable government.
Narrative C
The broad coalition vowed to change Israeli-Palestinian relations for the better but it was just another empty promise. There has been no breakthrough while dealing with the occupation and settlements, and tensions have run high since it took power.
Nerd narrative
There's a 43% chance that Netanyahu will be Prime Minister of Israel again by 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Nigeria: 8 Killed, 38 Kidnapped in Church Attacks
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) reported on Mon. that gunmen shot dead eight people and abducted 38 others in the northern state of Kaduna on Sunday.
Suspected terrorists on motorcycles reportedly assaulted villages in the Kajuru Local Government Area and attacked worshippers in the Maranatha Baptist Church and the St. Moses Catholic Church.
This is the second attack in Kaduna carried out by terrorists on motorcycles since June 8, when 32 people were killed.
Establishment-critical narrative
The Buhari admin. successfully fought the BH threat in the northeast, only to see Islamist insurgency and violence from "bandits" and "unknown gunmen" spreading across other parts of the country. In response, the federal government offers only rhetoric and a lackadaisical attitude that allows this violence to continue. It's time for Buhari to back up his words with actions.
Pro-establishment narrative
Although security challenges remain, the Buhari admin. is doing all it can to solve them, and has made important recent breakthroughs. By modernizing law enforcement forces and adopting a zero tolerance policy for crime, it has been able to improve Nigeria's position in the ranking of most terrorized nations. There is a long way to go, but the government is taking the threats seriously.
Cynical narrative
As the plight of Ukrainians mobilizes international aid and last year saw thousands gather for "Black Lives Matter" demonstrations, shouldn't something be done to help Nigerian Christians who have been systematically killed and displaced? Western governments are failing them and the press remains silent.
Day 119 Roundup: Russia Advances in East; Ukraine Claims 'Significant' Russian Losses in Attack on Snake Island
Ukrainian forces on Tues. launched an attack on the Black Sea island of Zmiinyi, also known as Snake Island, and claimed to have inflicted "significant losses" to Russian troops stationed there, according to a spokesperson for Odesa's military administration.
Russia's defense ministry confirmed the attack but claimed it shot down 13 unmanned drones and that its air defenses successfully repelled all missiles headed for the island. Neither the Ukrainian nor Russian claims on damage inflicted could be independently verified.
Elsewhere, in Russia's Rostov region, which borders Ukraine, a fire broke out at the Novoshakhtinsk oil refinery on Wednesday. Reuters reported that unverified social media footage showed a drone flying over the facility amid the blaze.
Anti-Russia narrative
This invasion is an egregious violation of international law. Putin's ultimate aim is to restore the Soviet empire, even if it takes massive bloodshed and false pretexts such as calling the 2014 Ukrainian revolution after a fraudulent election a "coup". This unprovoked attack is the latest chapter in Putin's Orwellian attempt to rewrite history.
Pro-Russia narrative
NATO and the US have ignored Russia's security concerns by breaking its promise not to expand eastward in return for German reunification. These concerns are legitimate and taking them seriously would have avoided the Ukraine tragedy.
Nerd narrative
There is a 20% chance that Ukraine will receive a security guarantee from another country before 2024, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Afghanistan: Earthquake Rescue Continues, Aid Arrives
Aid has started to arrive to Afghanistan following Wed. night's 6.1-magnitude earthquake that left at least 1K people dead, 1.5k injured, and more than 3K homes destroyed.
Spokesperson for the disaster ministry, Mohammad Nassim Haqqani, reported that rescue operations have finished in major districts, but continue in some remote areas.
The epicenter was 27 miles from the southeastern city of Khost, near the border with Pakistan at around 01:30 local time.
Establishment-critical narrative
Decades of conflict have left Afghanistan impoverished and unable to improve resilience for deadly earthquakes. There is real concern that the people in the hardest-hit areas have lost what little resources they had before this disaster. Even prior to the Taliban gaining control of the country, Afghanistan's emergency services were overwhelmed with few resources - showing the toll of endless wars. The international community has a moral obligation to step up.
Pro-establishment narrative
The United Nations and the international aid community are trying the best they can in Afghanistan, but they are stretched thin and have been unable to raise enough funds. This earthquake adds to the list of needs that already has international organizations battling factors including chronic malnutrition, unemployment, and the worst drought the area has seen in 37 years. Global institutions are trying to persevere in the face of these shocks and stressors.
SCOTUS: Public Funds Can Go To Maine Religious Schools
On Tues., SCOTUS ruled 6-3 that a tuition program in the state of Maine must allow public funds to go to religious schools.
The program pays private-school tuition for students in areas that lack public schools, but contained a nonsectarian clause that excluded religious schools.
The case, Carson v. Makin, was brought by two families who wanted "to send their children to Christian schools in the state", arguing "that the state's exclusion of schools that provide religious instruction from the program violates the Constitution."
Right narrative
With parents understandably withdrawing their children from public schools in droves, this is the biggest win for school choice advocates in a long time. Some parents prefer non-sectarian private schools or homeschooling, while others prefer religion-based schools, and this ruling affords the latter the opportunity to make those decisions for their own children.
Left narrative
SCOTUS' new conservative majority has effectively declared that the separation of church and state - a central pillar of the US Constitution - is unconstitutional. The consequences could be dire, including expulsions of teachers and students who don't comply with Christianity for starters. American's tax dollars could now potentially fund schools that force students to partake in religious activities and worship.
US, Iranian Military Vessels Nearly Crash in Strait of Hormuz
US Navy officials confirmed on Tues. that a warning flare was fired to prevent a crash between an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) speedboat and a US warship in the Strait of Hormuz on Mon. as the Iranian ship was allegedly traveling at a "dangerously high speed."
The incident between US Navy vessels - the USS Sirocco and the USNS Choctaw County - and three Iranian boats comes as talks to revive the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and global powers remain in deadlock.
Following the statement, video footage was released by the US Navy showing the Iranian high-speed Guard Boghammar nearing the USS Sirocco.
Establishment-critical narrative
The boldness of these Iranian naval maneuvers shows that Iran has a sense of superiority in the region. The Iranian navy isn't going to stop antagonizing the US in the Strait of Hormuz until Washington removes its sanctions on the Islamic Republic. Until then, the US will only continue to aimlessly - and dangerously - patrol and surveil the waters.
Pro-establishment narrative
The Iranian Guard has acted irresponsibly in the Strait of Hormuz for decades, having been involved in piracy and causing crises in the region for 40 years. Yet again, they have violated international law and put US military personnel at risk.
Nerd narrative
There's a 23% chance that the US will rejoin the Iran Nuclear Deal by 2024, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Biden Signs Gun Legislation Into Law
US Pres. Biden signed the most extensive gun legislation in decades on Sat. after the starkly divided Senate and House passed the bill earlier in the week.
After a bipartisan coalition in the Senate garnered a 65-33 vote in favor on Thurs., the House passed the bill, known as the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, on Fri. 234-193.
Although most Republicans in the House voted against the bill, 14 were in favor, including Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) and Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL).
Left narrative
Thanks to the perseverance of Democrats demanding common-sense gun control, Republicans have finally signed some, albeit moderate, gun measures. This is an important first step towards more advanced gun legislation in the future, such as maybe finally banning assault weapons.
Right narrative
There's every indication there will be a red wave in the midterm elections; Republican support for this bill is thus incomprehensible from a politically strategic standpoint. But beyond that, these laws are mostly fluff that will do nothing to prevent future mass shootings, which will only give Democrats more leverage when they inevitably call for outright gun confiscation in the future.
Nerd narrative
There's a 1% chance that the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution will be amended or repealed before 2025, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Katie Britt Wins Ala. GOP Senate Primary Runoff
On Tues., six-term Congressman Mo Brooks was defeated by Trump-endorsed candidate Katie Britt in the Ala. GOP Senate primary runoff. Britt captured 63% of the vote to Brooks' 37%.
Britt, a former chief of staff to retiring Sen. Richard Shelby and most recently the leader of the Business Council of Alabama, garnered 44.8% of the vote in last month's primary - shy of the 50% needed to avoid a runoff.
This race drew national attention because Trump initially endorsed Brooks, who voted against certifying Biden's victory in the 2020 election. In the lead-up to this year's primary, Trump rescinded his endorsement and shifted to Britt.
Pro-Trump narrative
Trump knows a loser when he sees one, and once Brooks was disloyal the former president had an easy call to make. With this seat a lock for the GOP, Trump knows he'll have another loyalist in the Senate come 2023.
Democratic narrative
This is the immoral state of the GOP. If you're not a servile stooge to Trump and his election lies, you get dumped in the blink of an eye. Where this will take democracy, no one knows.
SCOTUS upholds Roundup Settlement
On Tues., SCOTUS upheld a $25M settlement between manufacturing company Bayer and Edwin Hardeman, a Calif. man who said he developed cancer from using the company's Roundup weed killer.
Bayer appealed the settlement citing the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) official stance that glyphosate -the chemical said to cause non-Hodgkin's lymphoma- is not carcinogenic.
The ruling - which sets a precedent for thousands of similar lawsuits -came as the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals rejected and ordered a re-examination of the EPA's 2020 findings on glyphosate.
Establishment-critical narrative
While it was a long and hard-fought journey, Mr. Hardeman's perseverance has finally held Monsanto and Bayer accountable for corporate malfeasance and opened up the opportunity for thousands of other cancer patients to obtain justice for themselves and their families. Corporations are being held accountable.
Pro-establishment narrative
The EPA has ruled Roundup a safe product and Bayer has won four consecutive cases in state courts. These costly settlements against companies who do their due diligence are risking the future of innovation in agriculture, health, and other industries.
US Housing Market: Average Price Hits Record $407k as Sales Slump
The median sale price for an existing (previously occupied) home in the US rose to $407,600 in May - an all-time high that is nearly 15% over last year's figure - according to the National Association of Realtors.
At the same time, however, existing home sales fell 3.4% from April - a decline of 8.6% from May 2021 - marking a two-year low in the otherwise hot sector.
May marked the fourth straight month of declines in existing home sales, an indicator that rising interest rates on top of already historic prices have started to put a dent in soaring demand.
Narrative A
Home sales have now returned to the more sustainable - and rational - levels of 2019, before the pandemic-induced spending spree set in. This is good news although high mortgage rates will be a challenge for some buyers, they will also slacken demand and help to bring prices back to reality.
Narrative B
Higher mortgage rates may be necessary to cool off inflationary pressures, but they're making homes even more unaffordable for the vast majority of Americans. Homes that were affordable for middle-class Americans with a monthly budget of $2,500 are now well out of reach given the recent rate hikes and their impact on mortgage rates.
Nerd narrative
There's a 50% chance that the S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller City Composite Home Price NSA Index will be at least 295 for January 2025, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
