Iran Seizes Two Greek Oil Tankers As Tensions Rise

The Facts

  • Iran seized two Greek oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz on Fri. as tensions rise between Tehran and the West over Iran's nuclear deal.

  • The move comes in possible retaliation for an Iranian tanker that was stopped in Greek waters last month at US request. That ship, Lana (formally Pegas) recently changed its flag from Russia to Iran. It's owned by Transmorflot, a Russian company that was designated on May 8.

  • Earlier this week, Greek officials declared the cargo aboard Lana - believed to be around 100k tons of Iranian oil headed for Russia - would be sent to another vessel following a US judicial intervention.

The Spin

Establishment-critical narrative

Greece and the US have both carried out acts of piracy by breaking maritime laws to impound the Iranian oil tanker and its cargo. Both countries must be held responsible for such violations as Iran won't renounce its rights.

Pro-establishment narrative

The seizure of Lana was lawful as both the Russian-owned ship and its Iranian oil cargo are under US sanctions. Furthermore, the oil tanker has a checkered history typical of vessels operating in the shadows, including several changes in its name, ownership and banner over the years.

Nerd narrative

There is a 15% chance that the US will rejoin the Iran Nuclear Deal before 2023, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

Former Director of Louvre Museum Charged in Art Trafficking Case

The Facts

  • The former director of the Louvre, Jean-Luc Martinez, has been charged in connection with the trafficking of antiquities from the Middle East.

  • Martinez, who ran the Paris museum from 2013 until last year and currently serves as an ambassador for international cooperation in the field of art heritage, was indicted for "complicity of gang fraud and laundering" of items bought by the MET and the Louvre Abu Dhabi.

  • The case began in July 2018, two years after the Louvre Abu Dhabi purchased a rare pink granite stele depicting Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun and four other works for €8M. The gallery owner who brokered the sale was reportedly then arrested and brought to Paris for questioning.

The Spin

Narrative A

This shows that the trafficking of antiquities is not exclusive to terror groups and organized crime networks. Witting and unwitting collectors, auction houses, and art facilities all contribute to this theft. This is why all of civil society including businesses, governments, and international organizations must mobilize to protect our past.

Narrative B

Despite criticisms, temporary safe havens for endangered cultural objects are needed in some situations, particularly for artifacts in countries faced with conflict and instability. The practice actually helps address the problem of art theft - an atrocious act that leaves gaping holes in the material cultural heritage of poor peoples and fragile states.

MLB: Kapler Refuses to Take Field for National Anthem After Uvalde Tragedy

Photo: Rawstory

The Facts

  • MLB manager Gabe Kapler of the SF Giants has revealed that he will not be coming onto the field for the playing of the national anthem for the time being.

  • Following this week's school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, Kapler stated that he doesn't plan on coming out for the anthem until he feels "better about the direction of our country." He also stated, "I don't expect it to move the needle necessarily. It's just something that I feel strongly enough about to take that step."

  • Kapler, the reigning National League Manager of the Year, announced the revelation on his blog 'KapLifestyle.' The manager also knelt for the Star-Spangled Banner during the 2020 season in protest of police brutality, urging that he wanted to make his players "feel safe speaking up."

The Spin

Right narrative

Kapler's decision symbolizes America's recent decline. In 1976, Cubs outfielder Rick Monday boldly snatched an American flag away from two protestors who ran on the field to set it on fire. Now, in 2022, Kapler is advocating for a disarmed citizenry - on Memorial Day weekend, no less. Kapler's woke moral outrage is self-serving and self-congratulatory.

Left narrative

This is what patriotism looks like. Kapler knows his single act of protest isn't going to change the minds of millions of Americans on gun control, but if more people followed his example we might actually have a chance to solve this urgent issue. Kapler's actions are a reminder that the country has a lot of deep work to do.

Day 96 Roundup: Russian Forces Advance in Severodonetsk; EU Leaders Agree on Partial Oil Embargo

The Facts

  • Regional gov. of Luhansk Serhiy Gaidai said on Mon. that Russian soldiers have advanced into the outskirts of Severodonetsk. Heavy fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces continues, according to Gaidai, amid Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov's comments that Donetsk and Luhansk are Moscow's "absolute priority."

  • Meanwhile, Ukrainian MP Kira Rudik, leader of the opposition liberal Golos party, has urged Western countries to send further military aid to Ukraine to help repel Russian forces. In a visit to the UK, she said that long-range rockets would be crucial to Ukraine's military success.

  • This comes as leaked reports suggest that Germany has broken with Western policy and failed to provide heavy weapons promised to Ukraine. The EU nation has reportedly sent around 4.6K anti-tank mines along with other small military equipment, but no significant weapons for weeks.

The Spin

Anti-Russia narrative

This invasion is an egregious violation of international law. Putin's ultimate aim is to restore the Soviet empire, even if it takes massive bloodshed and false pretexts such as calling the 2014 Ukrainian revolution after a fraudulent election a "coup". This unprovoked attack is the latest chapter in Putin's Orwellian attempt to rewrite history.

Pro-Russia narrative

NATO and the US have ignored Russia's security concerns by breaking its promise not to expand eastward in return for German reunification. These concerns are legitimate and taking them seriously would have avoided the Ukraine tragedy.

Nerd narrative

There's a 50% chance there will be a bilateral cease-fire or peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia by September 13, 2022, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

PRC Agreements with Pacific Islands Yield Mixed Results

Photo: news

The Facts

  • After a high-level meeting on Mon., China and 10 Pacific island nations failed to agree on Beijing's proposed draft communiqué and five-year action plan for trade and security cooperation.

  • Nevertheless, the parties have reportedly agreed on several non-security areas, including economic recovery, and establishing centers for agriculture and disaster management. Talks are set to continue to align mutual expectations.

  • This comes midway through China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi's 10-day tour of eight Pacific nations aimed at deepening bilateral trade and security ties.

The Spin

Pro-China narrative

China has every right to build new partnerships in the Pacific, including in the area of security. It's the US that already boasts several military bases in the region, and the Quad Alliance puts Beijing further on the spot. The Pacific nations not wanting to be made the pawns of geopolitical interests is understandable, but it's the West that's responsible for this. And unlike Washington and its allies, China is aiming to score mainly through trade.

Anti-China narrative

By continuing to grow in military and economic strength, China poses an even greater threat to the rules-based world order and universal values than Russia. This makes it all the more necessary now to rein in Beijing's all-too-obvious plan to expand its military footprint and sphere of influence in the Pacific. Now is the time for Washington and its allies to act decisively but with strategic prudence to defend the open and inclusive international system.

Establishment-critical narrative

Pacific Island nations have every right to play both sides. The current security situation in the South Pacific makes it possible for less influential countries to benefit from the angst of regional powers. The Solomon Islands and its neighbors can leverage this to maximize aid from both China and the West.

Cynical narrative

None of the powers with an eye on Oceania - including the US, Australia, New Zealand, China, and Japan - are taking the true security concerns of the Pacific Islands seriously. The region is threatened by severe climate impacts, but these powers are more concerned with their own self interests. The security and future of the Pacific must be determined by Pacific Island countries on their own.

Report: Twitter Shareholders Sue Musk for Late Disclosures, Comments

The Facts

  • Twitter shareholders are reportedly suing Elon Musk alleging he manipulated stock prices by deliberately delaying disclosure of his stake in the social media platform.

  • On Apr. 25, Twitter's board of directors accepted Musk's $44B bid to buy the company. Musk's delayed disclosure of his stake in the platform reportedly saved him $156M.

  • The lawsuit also focuses on Musk's actions since Apr. 25. Regarding his statement that the transaction "cannot move forward" unless more information is provided on bots and fake accounts, it alleges that after Musk's "take it or leave it" offer, he waived his rights to look at the company's non-public finances.

The Spin

Narrative A

Despite the Twitter board's vows to hold Musk to the $44B price, a lot has changed in the past month to lower the price of tech stocks. Musk isn't going to be fooled into overpaying in this deal, and the bot issue will ultimately help him close for a lower price.

Narrative B

Musk's latest stunts potentially netted him millions at the cost of other investors. He has a history of disregarding SEC regulations, and then turning the tables and accusing the agency of subjecting him to unfounded investigations. These shenanigans must be regulated, and he must be held accountable.

Nerd narrative

There is a 99% chance that Twitter will agree to be taken private by Elon Musk on December 31, 2022, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

DoJ to Review Police Response to Texas School Shooting

Photo: pbs

The Facts

  • On Sun., the US Dept. of Justice announced that it will investigate the response of law enforcement officers to the mass shooting at the Robb elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, which left 19 children and two teachers dead.

  • "The Critical Incident Review" will provide an "independent account" of the actions and responses of authorities, and "identify lessons learned and best practices" for responding to shooter events, according to a spokesman from the justice department.

  • There has been mounting pressure on police since authorities revealed on Fri. that over a dozen officers were instructed to wait in a hallway, while students and teachers begged operators for help.

The Spin

Narrative A

The parents and children of Uvalde were utterly failed by authorities. Every second counts in shooter situations, and the delayed response by police almost certainly cost lives. Police conduct during the response - which ran contrary to well-established active shooter protocol - demands scrutiny and accountability.

Narrative B

While the police's actions were clearly a botched incident response, there is no statute that holds them liable for the deaths. This wasn't a matter of bad policy that needs reforming; it was a simple case of the chief of police making an incorrect assessment about the shooter, leading to incorrect tactics being followed. While the consequences were tragic, there was no intentional deprivation of civil rights.

Trump's Federal Suit Against New York AG Dropped

The Facts

  • On Fri., a federal judge in Albany, NY dismissed a lawsuit filed by Trump that sought to halt NY Attorney General (AG) Letitia James' investigation into his business dealings.

  • The AG's office said they opened the investigation due to a 2019 congressional testimony by former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen, who said Trump inflated and then deflated values of his assets for profit.

  • Trump claims that James' investigation is being carried out with "political animus" because she views him "as a political opponent." According to Judge Brenda Sannes, however, there is "no evidence" that James' investigation was undertaken in bad faith.

The Spin

Pro-Trump narrative

James is doing everything in her power to interfere with Trump's business dealings and harm his reputation. There is no case here. She is simply attacking Trump to further her own political career.

Democratic narrative

Trump's baseless legal challenges will not stop James' lawful investigation into his organization's financial dealings. No one can pick and choose how the law applies to them, and Trump is no exception.

Israeli Officials Criticize Nationalists After Chaos on Jerusalem Day

The Facts

  • On Mon., senior Israeli officials, including Defense Minister Benny Gantz and Public Security Minister Omer Bar Lev, called for right-wing nationalist organizations Lehava and La Familia to be declared terrorist organizations.

  • This comes a day after thousands of Israelis marched through Jerusalem, including through the Old City's Muslim Quarter, to mark Jerusalem Day, which celebrates the capture of the Old City and unification of Jerusalem in 1967 - an annexation not recognized internationally.

  • During the "flag march," some groups reportedly raided Damascus Gate in East Jerusalem while shouting "Death to Arabs," and "Let your village burn down," as well as allegedly attacking Palestinian residents.

The Spin

Pro-Palestine narrative

The Israeli flag march, which has become an annual event for Zionist extremists, is a supremacist demonstration aimed at provoking Palestinians and asserting control. Settlers and ultra-nationalists use the day to desecrate Muslim holy sites and attack Palestinian residents; all under the protection of the Israeli police.

Pro-Israel narrative

The flag march isn't about provoking Palestinians or stirring hate; it's a longstanding tradition of pilgrimage and a celebration of love for Jerusalem. Just because it has been politicized by a few groups inciting hate - which Israel has condemned and is rightly cracking down on - doesn't mean the whole tradition, which is largely peaceful, should be tainted.

Nerd narrative

There's an 8% chance that Israel and Palestine will hold peace talks in 2022, according to the Metaculus prediction community.

All 22 Bodies from Nepal Plane Crash Recovered

The Facts

  • Officials have retrieved the last of the 22 bodies of the people who died in a plane crash in the Nepal mountains on Sun. One of the plane's black boxes (the pilot's voice recording) was also retrieved.

  • All the bodies were flown to the country's capital, Kathmandu, where doctors are performing autopsies at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, Tara Air said in a statement. They will be handed over to relatives after the autopsies are completed.

  • The 43-year-old Canadian-made DHC-6-300 plane was carrying 4 Indian, 2 German, and 16 Nepali citizens when it took off from the resort town of Pokhara en route to the mountain town of Jomsom.

The Spin

Narrative A

This tragedy is sadly but the latest in Nepal's poor record with aviation safety. There are shortfalls in investments in plane manufacturing and infrastructure, and the government doesn't regulate their airlines strictly enough. In 2013, the European Union banned all Nepal-based airlines from flying in its airspace over these concerns.

Narrative B

The Nepali government's regulation of its airlines may not be perfect, but Nepal also has some of the world's most remote and tricky runways, flanked by snow-capped peaks with approaches that pose a challenge for even accomplished pilots. Conditions were extremely challenging when this catastrophe occurred.

Florida 5th Grader Arrested For Mass Shooting Threat

The Facts

  • A fifth grade student in FL was arrested over the weekend for making threats about a mass shooting by text message.

  • Police handcuffed the 10-year-old boy and put him in the back of a cruiser on Sat. evening. He was later charged with making written threats to conduct a mass shooting, according to Lee County Sheriff's Office.

  • Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno described the threats as "sickening" and said that "now is not the time to act like a little delinquent."

The Spin

Left narrative

Gun violence and culture in America is completely out of control and innocent victims are suffering the consequences. The Uvalde tragedy could easily have been avoided with better gun control. Yes, the year-old should be punished for making threats but, ultimately, arresting children for text messages won't solve the mess made by lawmakers.

Right narrative

The truth on gun control is that if the government takes firearms away from citizens, only criminals will have them. We don't need a totalitarian solution - instead, police need to act swiftly and strongly to respond, especially in today's climate of mass violence, and threats to schools.

UN Human Rights Chief Challenges China's Uyghur Policies

The Facts

  • Michelle Bachelet, the UN human rights chief, said on Sat. that she has asked Chinese officials to reconsider the impact of counterterrorism and deradicalization policies on Uyghurs and other primarily Muslim groups.

  • The ruling Communist Party has faced renewed accusations of minority abuses following a vast document leak that coincided with her controversial visit to the far-western region of Xinjiang.

  • Documents included internal material detailing a shoot-to-kill policy for inmates attempting to escape internment camps.

The Spin

Anti-China narrative

Despite the warnings set out by the Biden admin, Bachelet has allowed her visit to be turned into a propaganda win for the Chinese Communist Party. She grotesquely praised their "tremendous achievements" in human rights in relation to poverty and failed to clearly condemn ongoing government-led repression and genocide. The UN must do more to tackle human rights abuses in China or risk becoming complicit.

Pro-China narrative

While anti-China forces continue attempting to pin fabricated allegations of "genocide" on Beijing, Bachelet has concluded an open and successful visit, the first of a UN Human Rights High Commissioner to China for 17 years. Blatant attempts to smear China carry on, as the US ignores the real purpose of Bachelet's trip and attempts to turn the UN into its puppet.

Establishment-critical narrative

Genocide accusations against China all originate from a single source a German right-wing religious extremist, Adrian Zenz, affiliated with shady neoconservative think tanks. A careful review of Zenz's so-called evidence in the past has revealed flagrant data abuse and outright fabrications.

Nerd narrative

There is a 25% chance that the UN will open an investigation into the issue of Xinjiang internment camps by 2024, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
