McDonald's Golden Arches Removed in Russia As Exit Begins

On Mon., fast-food giant McDonald's retreat from Russia began with the removal of a golden arches sign outside Moscow - a week after the company announced its plans to sell and leave the Russian market entirely following the invasion of Ukraine.
The fast-food chain has agreed to sell its Russian locations to local licensee Alexander Govor who operates 25 locations throughout Siberia. Via the acquisition, Govor has also agreed to retain all Russian Mcdonald's employees for at least two years and pay the salaries of local corporate employees until the deal closes.
In March, McDonald's closed all of its 850 restaurants and continued to pay its 62K employees, costing the company $50M per month.
Anti-Russia narrative
McDonald's choice to exit from Russia should be applauded. The Golden Arches used to symbolize that Western values had penetrated the Iron Curtain; the company's wise exit is now a symbol of democracy curdling under Putin.
Pro-Russia narrative
The sale of McDonald's will provide an opportunity for Russian businesses to come in and fill the void. This will not only provide the Russian people with a replacement eatery but also a chance to strengthen the national economy.
FDA Reaches Agreement with Abbott Amid Formula Shortage

Abbott Nutrition, one of the largest baby formula manufacturers in the US, said on Mon. it had reached a deal with the FDA to reopen its Sturgis, Michigan, plant amid a nationwide shortage of infant formula.
Robert M. Califf, FDA Commissioner, also confirmed on Mon. that production at the facility could restart within two weeks, with the national shortage set to be resolved by the end of the year.
The company claimed in a written statement that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had found no "conclusive evidence" linking formulas made at its Michigan facility to the infant illnesses and fatalities that brought about a product recall in February.
Democratic narrative
The Biden administration is making every effort to ensure there's an adequate supply of baby formula during this crisis which is hitting the most vulnerable hardest. The FDA is working with manufacturers to make a desperately needed supply available and to help mitigate the suffering of low-income Americans enduring this shortfall.
Narrative B
Despite the White House's proactivity on mitigating the formula shortage, the flexibility of the FDA and negotiations between officials and manufacturers are not providing immediate relief from the shortfall. Imported products could take weeks to hit the American market and the administrations website, supposedly designed to provide resources to families in need, is a totally ineffective platform.
Establishment-critical narrative
The formula shortage exemplifies the failures of US health and child care systems and its roots lie not only in short-term breakdowns, but in the concentration of industry power. Pres. Biden should be seeking to suspend tariffs, streamline approvals and invoke the Defense Production Act to force private industry to produce more formula and play their part in alleviating the crisis.
Sri Lanka: Parliament Reconvenes as PM Warns of Hardship

Sri Lanka's parliament reconvened this week for a four-day session that began with the ruling party's candidate, Ajith Rajapakse, appointed as deputy speaker after winning 109 votes in a secret ballot - compared to 78 for the opposition's nominee.
This comes a day after Sri Lanka's new PM announced that the crisis-plagued nation was down to its last day of gasoline, amid anti-government protests that saw nine people killed and 300 injured last week.
Former PM, Ranil Wickremesinghe, was asked to resume his post last week following the resignation of Mahinda Rajapaksa, brother of the sitting president.
Pro-establishment narrative
Former PM Mahinda Rajapaksa was a beloved figure who has devoted his entire adult life to public service; he just wasn't equipped to handle Sri Lanka's unprecedented economic turmoil. With his resignation, Pres. Gotabaya Rajapaksa can bring new blood into his administration in the form of Wickremesinghe to solve this crisis.
Establishment-critical narrative
Wickremesinghe is not the band-aid that Pres. Gotabaya Rajapaksa thinks he will be. Sri Lankans see him as just another connected and corrupt career politician being brought in to replace Mahinda without challenging Rajapaksa's control. The move will not quell the anger of anti-government protests.
Nerd narrative
There is a 50% chance that Gotabaya Rajapaksa will no longer be president of Sri Lanka by 2023, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Day 84 Roundup: First War Crimes Trial Commences in Kyiv; Peace Talks Reportedly Stall

As the first war crimes trial of a Russian soldier commenced in Kyiv on Wed., Vadim Shishimarin, 21, pleaded guilty to the Feb. 28 murder of a 62-year-old man.
A day previously, Karim Khan QC, the British chief prosecutor for the International Criminal Court, announced that the court has sent its "largest ever" team of experts to Ukraine. The 42-strong group is made up of investigators, forensic experts and support staff, and will collect evidence of alleged Russian war crimes.
Also on Tues., the US State Dept. announced the formation of The Conflict Observatory. According to a statement from the Dept., it will "capture, analyze, and make widely available evidence of Russia-perpetrated war crimes and other atrocities in Ukraine."
Anti-Russia narrative
This invasion is an egregious violation of international law. Putin's ultimate aim is to restore the Soviet empire, even if it takes massive bloodshed and false pretexts such as calling the 2014 Ukrainian revolution after a fraudulent election a "coup". This unprovoked attack is the latest chapter in Putin's Orwellian attempt to rewrite history.
Pro-Russia narrative
NATO and the US have ignored Russia's security concerns by breaking its promise not to expand eastward in return for German reunification. These concerns are legitimate and taking them seriously would have avoided the Ukraine tragedy.
Nerd narrative
There is a 4% chance that Putin and Zelenskyy will meet to discuss the peaceful resolution of the Russian-Ukraine conflict before 2023, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Starbucks to Pay for Travel Expenses for Workers Seeking Abortions
/cloudfront-us-east-2.images.arcpublishing.com/reuters/YYHISOOUBBM6RDV4SPWSRG6JCM.jpg)
Starbucks have announced that they will cover the cost of travel expenses for US employees seeking abortion and gender-reassignment procedures who don't have access within 100mi of their home.
Expenses will also cover and be offered to dependents of employees who use Starbuck's healthcare plan, with company policy officially supporting the right to abortion.
The coffee chain is part of a growing list of Fortune 500 companies, including Tesla, Microsoft, Amazon, Apple and Salesforce, that will be offering the benefit to those who cannot gain immediate access to such procedures.
Conservative narrative
The decision by Starbucks could be bad for their business, with a Trafalgar Group study showing that 87.1% of people would likely stop using a service with a political agenda they disagreed with. As the majority of Americans don't agree with Roe, it is possible they won't agree with Starbucks either.
Progressive narrative
Starbucks are joining the growing list of major companies and celebrities responding to the potential overturning of Roe by supporting their employees and helping the fight to maintain abortion rights in the US. Rights are being unconstitutionally eroded and Starbucks should be celebrated for taking a moral stand.
Nerd narrative
There is a 90% chance that Roe v. Wade will be overturned during 2022, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Trial of Clinton Lawyer Accused of Lying to FBI About Trump Commences
A jury in Washington, DC on Tues. heard opening arguments in the case of Michael Sussmann – a lawyer for Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign accused of lying to the FBI in the weeks leading up to the election.
Sussmann brought internet data to FBI General Counsel James Baker that purported to tie then-candidate Donald Trump to the Russian entity Alfa Bank. He stands accused of lying to the bureau when he stated that he shared the material as a concerned citizen, rather than on behalf of a particular client.
The FBI found no evidence of impropriety when they examined the data.
Left narrative
Durham's investigation is a clear example of political prosecution. Regardless of whether or not he is successful in bringing convictions, he has already convinced right-wing media pundits and politicians that there was a wide-ranging conspiracy to bring down Trump using false information. This is simply untrue, and Durham's charges are overstated.
Right narrative
Durham is a career Dept. of Justice prosecutor whose convictions include that of the notorious Boston criminal Whitey Bulger. This trial is just the tip of the iceberg in showing how Clinton and her operatives were willing to lie to law enforcement to falsely paint Trump as a Russian agent ahead of the US presidential election.
Nerd narrative
There's a 2% chance that Hillary Clinton will run for president of the US in 2024, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
Massive Drug-Smuggling Tunnel Found Linking Tijuana, San Diego
US authorities have discovered an underground smuggling tunnel near San Diego's Otay Mesa border crossing. It reportedly runs about the length of six football fields and contains reinforced walls, electricity, ventilation, and a rail system.
According to authorities, the tunnel connects a house in Tijuana to a warehouse in an industrial area in San Diego. Several other sophisticated tunnels have been located in this area in the last two decades.
Homeland Security Investigation agents reportedly discovered the tunnel on Fri. while doing surveillance on a residence that was used for cocaine smuggling in Mar., with six people charged with conspiracy to commit drug trafficking.
Republican narrative
This discovery should be a wake-up call for DC lawmakers to pass legislation to combat the urgent crisis at the US southern border. Democrats are dragging their feet and have consistently refused to address this major problem, and until they do, the crime wave will continue.
Democratic narrative
Though Republicans may have you believe that border protection policies will increase security, they simply won't. This tunnel was built in one of the most fortified stretches of the border, and policies are no match for sophisticated passages that smugglers have been using for years. More effective approaches are required.
US Conducts Successful Hypersonic Weapon Test

On Mon., the US announced it had successfully test-fired a hypersonic weapon. The Air-launched Rapid Response Weapon (ARRW) was released from a B-52 bomber over the coast of Southern California.
The "game-changing" ARRW flew at five times the speed of sound and, according to a US Air Force spokesman, will be made operational as soon as possible. Previously, the service had failed three times to successfully test the weapon.
However, in mid-Mar., the Pentagon announced that a prototype hypersonic missile developed by Lockheed Martin and based on the Hypersonic Air-breathing Weapon Concept (HAWC) had been successfully launched.
Pro-establishment narrative
Although the effectiveness of hypersonic weapons must be analyzed soberly, the US can no longer afford to be held back by scientific and political debates while leaving supremacy in this area to China and Russia. Washington must finance advancements with this technology, and this is only the first step in developing sound hypersonic capabilities.
Establishment-critical narrative
The US should reconsider its approach. Despite the hype, hypersonic weapons aren't an actual and effective revolution in weapons technology. They are threatening primarily because of the arms race they trigger - a development that the US has only encouraged by withdrawing from crucial arms control treaties.
Fetterman Wins PA Democratic Senate Primary Days After Stroke

Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. John Fetterman has won the state's Democratic primary for US Senate, despite suffering a stroke Fri. and undergoing a procedure to install a pacemaker in his heart over the weekend.
Fetterman, who remained hospitalized as voting took place, defeated US Rep. Conor Lamb and state Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta to advance to the general election.
The Lt. Gov. is a staunch supporter of a progressive platform, including organized labor, legalizing marijuana, and raising the national minimum wage to $15/hour.
Democratic narrative
Fetterman has the everyman aesthetic appeal - and the right platform - to reach voters Democrats wouldn't normally be able to convince. He'll have a strong shot to turn this seat blue against the GOP candidate.
Republican narrative
The Democrats are taking a risk trying to win a statewide election with Fetterman, who comes from the Bernie Sanders wing of the party. He also has major baggage through his refusal to apologize for a 2013 incident when he held an unarmed Black jogger at gunpoint.
Dallas Shooting: FBI Opens Hate Crime Probe
/cloudfront-us-east-1.images.arcpublishing.com/dmn/KAP75KUHB5BWJH7FRHKVK62D5E.jpg)
The FBI has opened a hate crime investigation into a man who was arrested by Dallas police on Mon. in connection with a shooting at a Korean-owned hair salon last week.
Jeremy Smith reportedly entered the Hair World Salon and fired more than a dozen shots with a .22 caliber rifle, injuring three Korean women. He has been charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Smith was connected to the event after police linked him to a red 2004 Honda Odyssey seen in surveillance footage. A search warrant executed on the vehicle reportedly produced a handgun, a gun magazine, and ammunition.
Left narrative
Unfortunately, anti-Asian sentiment has always been part of American society, and it will continue to be unless people speak up. Attacks against Asians are all too frequent, but non-Asians are quick to ignorantly disregard the role of race. America's white supremacist structure has historically fueled tensions in Asian communities, and it's time this changes.
Right narrative
The driving force behind urban crime is not racism, but rather the malevolence of thugs like Jeremy Smith. The Asian community faces violence from an ethnically diverse group of criminals - most of them non-whites - who need to be held accountable. The state must be tough on crime to solve this problem.
