MD Lawmakers Override Veto, Expand Abortion Access

Maryland's Democrat-controlled General Assembly has overridden Republican Gov. Larry Hogan's veto on a measure to expand access to abortion in the state.
The new law will end a restriction that only permits physicians to provide abortions, allowing any provider who already cares for pregnant patients - including midwives, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners - to do so.
A $3.5M abortion care training program will also be created, and most insurance plans will be required to cover the procedures without cost.
Right narrative
This is disappointing, and radical. Many companies will now be compelled to pay for abortions, which should be private and personally-funded procedures. Taxpayers will also be forced to contribute to something they may fundamentally disagree with. Besides, the new law will only lead to more risk for women, as it's now legal for non-physicians to perform abortions.
Left narrative
Counter to what Republicans are saying, this new measure is not radical. It's purpose is simply to support more practitioners who can provide these procedures. It will ensure that patients don't face long waits or financial barriers, guaranteeing fair access to health care.
Trump Endorses Dr. Oz in PA Senate Race

Former president Trump has given Mehmet Oz his "complete and total endorsement" in the tightly contested PA Republican Senate primary.
Trump, in a published statement and reiterated during a rally in NC, cited several factors for his endorsement, including Oz's 18 years as host of the "Dr. Oz Show" on television.
Among seven candidates that'll be on the GOP ballot on May 17, Oz and former hedge fund manager David McCormick are neck-and-neck for the lead. The winner will run for retiring Sen. Pat Toomey's seat.
Democratic narrative
Trump's reasons for endorsing Oz are all terrible, but it's not surprising to see these two grifting television stars joining forces. The fact that Trump has alienated his base by supporting Oz is even better for the Democrats.
Pro-Trump narrative
Never underestimate Trump! He's proven time and again that he knows winners. Even if Dr. Oz isn't a "dyed-in-the-wool conservative," he can win a general election and Republicans need to do anything to take the Senate.
Conservative narrative
This is not a very wise endorsement by Trump. The only explanation is that he's been misled - otherwise he'd never endorse someone who has flip flopped on being pro-life, has promoted a transgendered lifestyle for children, and held several other positions contrary to conservative values.
Day 48 Roundup: Putin Ally Captured, Chemical Weapons Allegedly Used in Mariupol

Putin's closest ally in Ukraine and leader of the largest opposition party, Viktor Medvedchuk, was reportedly captured by law enforcement on Tues., after escaping house arrest days after the invasion began. Zelenskyy has proposed to release him in exchange for captured Ukrainians.
It comes amid an unsubtantiated allegation originating from the Azov Battalion that an unspecified chemical weapon was used in the besieged southern port city of Mariupol. Some observers expressed scepticism that the available evidence points towards a chemical weapons attack.
Meanwhile, the Mayor of Mariupol, Vadym Boychenko, has claimed that more than 20k civilians have died since the start of the Russian invasion. He also accused Russian forces of blocking aid convoys from accessing the city, as around 120k reportedly remain trapped in need of food, water, and other basic supplies.
Establishment-critical narrative
It's hypocritical for the West to so widely denounce Russia for unverified claims of using white phosphorous as a chemical weapon, when no one wants to even investigate, let alone condemn, its documented recent use by Turkey against Kurds and Israel against Palestinians.
Anti-Russia narrative
This invasion is an egregious violation of international law. Putin's ultimate aim is to restore the Soviet empire, even if it takes massive bloodshed and false pretexts such as calling the 2014 Ukrainian revolution after a fraudulent election a "coup". This unprovoked attack is the latest chapter in Putin's Orwellian attempt to rewrite history.
Pro-Russia narrative
NATO and the US have ignored Russia's security concerns by breaking its promise not to expand eastward in return for German reunification. These concerns are legitimate and taking them seriously would have avoided the Ukraine tragedy.
Nerd narrative
According to the Metaculus prediction community, if a bilateral cease-fire agreement is reached between Russia and Ukraine this year, it won't take effect until the end of June.
Iowa Supreme Court: Dem. Abby Finkenauer Can Be On Primary Ballot

US Senate candidate Abby Finkenauer will be allowed to appear on the Democratic primary ballot, the Iowa Supreme Court ruled Fri.
This overturns a previous ruling by a lower court earlier this week, when a district court judge ruled that Finkenauer failed to qualify by not obtaining enough valid signatures.
Polk County District Judge Scott Beattie had argued that three of the more than 5k signatures submitted didn't include the correct date. However, the Supreme Court found that a state law enacted last year means that missing or incorrect dates is not grounds for objecting a petition.
Democratic narrative
The process of democracy has been restored. The lower court ruling was misguided and almost gave an unfair gift to the Republicans. Iowans clearly want Finkenauer on the ballot, and their voices should be heard.
Republican narrative
A year ago, Finkenauer would have remained off the ballot without question. This ruling just shows that the previously held guidelines have been thrown by the wayside. The Republicans followed the rules; why should there be exceptions for the Democrats?
Herschel Walker a No-Show at GOP Debate

Former UGA football standout Herschel Walker, now a Republican candidate for a GA Senate seat, reportedly missed the first GOP primary debate on Sat.
He said he had a scheduling conflict because he attended the Horatio Alger Award ceremony in DC that morning.
Walker, who won the Heisman Trophy and went on to play in the NFL, is currently the frontrunner to win the GOP nomination to challenge Democratic incumbent Raphael Warnock.
Democratic narrative
Walker has lied repeatedly and extensively about his credentials, and has been credibly accused of domestic violence. He is an utterly unfit candidate, who is unable to even fake competency. It's unsurprising that his campaign team has worked hard to keep him out of the public eye.
Republican narrative
With a comfortable lead in the polls, why should Walker give his Republican opponents a chance to attack him and provide ammunition for the Democrats in the general election? Plus, there's no way Walker would get a fair shake from mainstream media moderators.
House Oversight Investigating $2B Saudi Investment in Jared Kushner's Firm

Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner's private equity firm, Affinity Partners, is under investigation by the House Oversight Committee for receiving a $2B investment from the Saudi Public Investment Fund six months after the end of Trump's presidency.
The investigation will examine whether Kushner's personal financial interests influenced US foreign policy while he served in the White House.
The investment was reportedly made only after Mohammed Bin-Salman (MBS), the de facto Saudi leader, overruled the objections of the Saudi fund's advisors. The Saudi government and the Saudi Public Investment Fund have not yet commented on the investigation.
Democratic narrative
You don't need to be an ethics expert to see what's going on here; this is either payback for Trump-era policy favors, an early buying of influence for a future Trump presidency, or both.
Republican narrative
This is an attempt to distract from the Hunter Biden scandal; there's no proof of wrongdoing with this Saudi-Kushner deal, unlike what's already known and what's about to come out about Hunter and Joe Biden's nefarious actions.
Cynical narrative
Whichever way you slice it, Kushner's deal is suspicious. This isn't a pro-Trump or anti-Trump question, this is a matter of corruption and brazen misuse of power right at the heart of American politics. The investigation needs to remain unbiased to any one party.
Alleged NYC Subway Shooter Pleads Not Guilty

On Fri, Frank James pled not guilty in federal court to terrorism and other charges following last month's NYC subway mass shooting.
His court appearance comes one week after a grand jury issued a federal indictment for terrorism.
If convicted of committing a terrorist attack on mass transit, James could face a life sentence.
Right narrative
James is the very definition of a terrorist. All too often the right gets labeled for acts of "domestic terrorism," but this phenomenon exists on the left too. Arson on federal buildings, courthouses, and general lawlessness are hallmarks of terrorism from the radical left, and James fits the textbook definition in this horrific tragedy.
Left narrative
The proliferation of guns is a root cause of these incidents. Research has proven that where there are more guns, there's more gun violence. Gun control laws work and, if anything, NYC and similar cities need to further tighten up their restrictions.
Cynical narrative
In incidents like the NYC subway shooting, both the right and left talk extensively about how to prevent these tragedies. But sadly their words don't translate into actions that actually curb the violence.
