Pakistan: Opposition Leader Shehbaz Sharif Becomes New PM

Shehbaz Sharif, a leading opposition figure and younger brother of former PM Nawaz Sharif, won Parliament's support on Mon. to become Pakistan's new PM. He will now form a government that can remain in place until elections are held in Aug. 2023.
This comes after Pakistan's political opposition removed former PM Imran Khan in a no-confidence vote on Sun. Khan is the nation's first PM to be removed by such a vote.
Khan immediately called for demonstrations across Pakistan to oppose Sunday's move, with protests occuring in Islamabad and even London.
Pro-establishment narrative
Shehbaz is the right choice for Pakistan. He's an experienced politician who will be able to lead the country through its current political and economic crisis. Unlike Khan, he knows how to deal with other political parties and red tape in order to bring prosperity to the nation and help the people.
Establishment-critical narrative
Khan's ousting was a Western conspiracy. The US has a long history of foreign meddling, especially in Muslim countries, and this latest move is likely a response to Khan seeking an independent foreign policy and not supporting the West's war effort against Russia.
Former Trump Aide Voted in Two State Primaries in 2016

Matt Mowers, a one-time aide to former President Trump and current candidate for Congress in New Hampshire, voted twice in the 2016 presidential primary election.
He was working for the presidential campaign of former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie in New Hampshire, when he cast a ballot in the state's Feb. 2016 primary.
Four months later, Mowers voted in the New Jersey presidential primary. He used his parents' home address to re-register, in a potential violation of federal voting laws.
Pro-Trump narrative
This is much ado about nothing. Mowers didn't break the law, he voted in two different primary elections after he had re-established residency in his native state for 30 days. The Dems and the mainstream media are drumming up controversy because they're afraid Mowers would shake things up in DC.
Left narrative
The hypocrisy of today's GOP is too much to bear. Despite the rhetoric of "Stop the Steal", and the party's focus on election fraud, its own members have repeatedly faced accusations of fraudulent voting. Meanwhile, Black voters are the only ones who ever seem to get charged with violations of election law.
Establishment-critical narrative
The election system itself is flawed. Democrats and Republicans are unlikely to ever reach a consensus over how elections are conducted - public distrust in the system allows for draconian measures to combat it and, as a result, enables voter suppression.
Pro-establishment narrative
Voter fraud is extremely rare in the United States. Most alleged fraud, such as that of Mowers and Meadows, is actually down to mistakes made by voters or during the administration process.
Boris Johnson Voices Support for Trans Athlete Ban

On Wed., UK PM Boris Johnson voiced his support for banning transgender women from female sports, as well as for women-only spaces in prisons, bathrooms, and hospitals.
This follows the barring of transgender cyclist Emily Bridges from competing in the women's British National Omnium championship last weekend.
Following Bridges' elimination, a group of female cyclists signed a letter requesting the UCI to rescind a rule allowing transgender athletes to compete in women's categories.
Left narrative
Trans people are often misrepresented in the sports community. Inclusion policies need to be created to mediate this extremely complex and fast-evolving issue. Bridges is a disappointing example of trans athletes not being given a fair chance to compete. Nobody should be forced to choose between who they are and participating in the sport they love.
Right narrative
Boris Johnson rightly supports the restriction of biological males from competing against women, where they have a biological advantage. Females across Britain are dropping out of sports due to the pressure of competing against transgender women; the PM's comments demonstrate his commitment to maintaining a fair playing field for all.
DOJ Charges Russian Businessman with Violating Sanctions

Federal prosecutors have charged Russian businessman Konstantin Malofeyev with sanctions violations. The billionaire was added to the Treasury Department's list in 2014 accused of supporting separatists in Ukraine.
The DOJ accuses him of evading sanctions by attempting to covertly acquire and run pro-Kremlin media outlets across Europe. Although Malofeyev was blocked by the sanctions from doing business with US citizens, he did so anyway according to the charges.
The case stems from the DOJ's KleptoCapture Taskforce, which aims to prosecute criminals whose acts continue to enable the war in Ukraine.
Pro-establishment narrative
The only way to make Putin stop the war in Ukraine is to squeeze any Russian benefiting from links to Moscow. US authorities will continue to 'seize and freeze' Russian oligarch's assets, wherever they try to hide them.
Establishment-critical narrative
It's hypocritical to impose sanctions on Russia for invading Ukraine, but not on the US for invading Iraq for equally unjustified reasons, or on Israel for invading and annexing Arab lands.
Libertarian narrative
These sanctions are unfair and there is a clear risk they will lead to widespread Russophobia. It's not just the sanctions on Russian oligarchs, there are also many informal sanctions on Russian people, culture and business. This is cancel culture stigmatizing an entire population for the crimes of one autocrat.
South Carolina House Passes Transgender Sports Ban

On Tues., South Carolina's HOR passed a bill to ban transgender athletes from competing in girl's sports at public grade schools and universities.
The bill, dubbed "Save the Women's Sports Act", passed 82 - 28, after an attempt by Democrats to delay the vote with ~1k amendments.
Among the proposed revisions, Democrats called to rename the bill the "Discrimination Capital of the United States Act."
Left narrative
This legislation will only serve to fuel stigma and shame already directed towards vunerable youth, and deny transgender girls equal rights in South Carolina. Gender non-conforming children are being used as a political bargaining chip.
Right narrative
Sport is about the body and male and female bodies are different. Cisgender female athletes are at risk of being left to compete for second place against trans competitors with an obvious biological advantage. Trans athletes have no place in women's sport.
Oklahoma Gov. Signs Bill to Make Abortion Illegal

On Tues., Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt signed Senate Bill 612, making all abortions illegal in the state except in the case of a medical emergency.
The legislation will make performing an abortion punishable by up to 10 yrs in prison and a fine of $100k, but will not penalize the mother.
The ban comes after another Oklahoma bill that would allow private citizens to sue doctors who perform abortions was recently sent to the Senate.
Left narrative
This is the latest in a string of radical anti-abortion laws that seek to overturn Roe v. Wade. The new legislation blatantly violates Roe, and criminalizes any doctor who stands up for women's rights. The ban will never hold up and is nothing more than a Hail Mary attempt to bring down Roe.
Right narrative
Oklahoma has reached a crisis point on the issue of abortion. Abortions violate an unborn baby's fundamental right to live, and it's the state's responsibility to protect them. The recent bans in Oklahoma will bring the state one step closer to being a safe haven for the unborn.
Nerd narrative
According to the Metaculus prediction community, there is a 60% chance that Roe v. Wade will be overturned before 2023.
Text Message of Clinton Campaign Lawyer, Accused of Lying to FBI, Revealed

In a court filing on Mon., Special Counsel John Durham released a text message sent in Sep. 2016 by Michael A. Sussmann, a lawyer for Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign, to former FBI General Counsel James Baker.
Sussmann, who is accused of lying to the FBI when he presented data that tied then-candidate Trump to a Russian bank, said he did so as a concerned citizen – not as a lawyer working for a client or political entity.
Durham, however, alleges the information was handed over on behalf of the Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee.
Republican narrative
Clinton operatives, in league with big tech, concocted false information tying Trump to Russia and presented it to the FBI to discredit him ahead of the 2016 election. This is a scandal of Nixonian proportions and makes Watergate look like horseplay.
Democratic narrative
Durham, appointed by AG William Barr in the Trump era, has repeatedly used court filings to air unproven conspiracies that the Clinton campaign was involved in a wide-ranging attempt to discredit Trump. He hasn't charged anyone with this however, and needs to be more careful with his assertions.
Yemen's President Steps Aside Amidst Efforts to End War

Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, Yemen's exiled president, stepped aside and transferred his powers to a presidential council on Thurs., as efforts to end Yemen's civil war gain momentum with a shaky two-month truce.
Saudi Arabia and the UAE, who support Hadi's government, welcomed the decision, pledging $3B in aid.
Hadi mentioned that the presidential council would be tasked with negotiating with the Houthis for a permanent ceasefire.
Establishment-critical narrative
Saudi Arabia and its allies are conducting war crimes in Yemen and the Houthis' resistance is just as legitimate as the resistance in Ukraine. The war in Yemen has caused massive humanitarian suffering for the Yemeni people, but the media has consistently failed to extensively cover it.
Pro-establishment narrative
Saudi Arabia and its allies have been trying to bring stability to Yemen for years, but all their efforts have been met with intransigence. The Iran-backed Houthis are only making the horrific complex emergency in Yemen worse. Hopefully, this recent decision will make peace easier to achieve in the near future.
Mortgage Rates Rise as Fed Fights Inflation

US mortgage rates are rising at their highest rate in almost 3 decades as the Federal Reserve ("Fed") moves to raise interest rates in order to control inflation.
Minutes from the Fed's Mar. meeting were released this week, revealing that the central bank is looking to trim its balance sheet by selling some of its $9T in bonds, including $2.7T in mortgage-backed securities.
The Fed's inflated balance sheet is a result of "quantitative easing," whereby the Fed purchases US Treasury bonds and mortgage-backed securities with newly printed dollars in order to inject liquidity into struggling financial markets.
Narrative A
There's a broad consensus among Fed bankers and economists that the time is right for some quantitative tightening to reign in inflation. Inflation is high and the labor market is tight, so the Fed is acting well within its mandate to try and tamp down inflationary pressures.
Narrative B
60% of Americans live paycheck-to-paycheck, and many are already having to cut back on expenses as inflation rips through the economy. If the Fed moves too quickly with quantitative tightening, it risks sending the economy straight into a recession.
Cynical narrative
The Fed has been stuck with a bloated balance sheet since the financial crisis in 2008. It tried to unwind its positions in 2019, but was forced to abandon the moves as markets wobbled. Conditions haven't improved since then, so there's no reason to believe that the Fed to follow through on this latest round of monetary tightening.
Nerd narrative
According to the Metaculus prediction community, annual inflation in the US will be 5.58% for 2022.
Report: DOJ is Investigating Trump's Handling of Classified Documents

The DOJ has launched an investigation into Trump's handling of official government records and potential violation of the Presidential Records Act (PRA), according to sources familiar with the probe.
The probe is related to 15 boxes of official WH records - including some marked classified - that the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) retrieved from Trump's Mar-a-Lago property in Jan. 2022.
It's not clear whether Trump would personally face any legal liability for the apparent failures to comply with official record-keeping statutes, but those who handled and transported the documents may face consequences.
Pro-Trump narrative
Is Trump the first president to violate the PRA? Not a chance. This is a perfectly normal and routine bureaucratic process that is being weaponized to suit the agenda of the radical Left and its mainstream media allies.
Left narrative
It's clear why Congress was denied access to the materials to protect what's obviously an open and ongoing investigation into the twice-impeached former President. He stole classified intelligence and stored it at his unsecured country club - a magnet for foreign intelligence agents.
Cynical narrative
Merrick Garland's DOJ has proven itself to be excessively timid when it comes to dealing with the potential crimes of the previous administration. While the DOJ can't comment on an open and ongoing investigation, there's no sign that any meaningful investigation is actually happening, at least not in a timely manner.
New Unemployment Claims Reach 54-Year Low
The US Labor Dept. has reported that 166K people filed for unemployment benefits last week, 5k fewer than the week before and the fewest for any week since 1968.
Claims have trended down as high levels of govt. spending and vaccine availability have helped the economy recover from the pandemic.
Part of the unemployment decline is also attributed to a revision of the seasonal factors the govt. uses to strip out fluctuations from the data.
Left narrative
It's time to celebrate. Jobless claims aren't just back to pre-pandemic levels, they're better. Combined with the low unemployment rate, Biden has brought the economy back.
Right narrative
There's not reason to celebrate. These numbers are a smokescreen when you consider that the worker shortage is leading to higher wages, higher demand for goods and services, and increased inflation. Moreover, the number of people continuing to receive unemployment benefits after their first application actually went up.
Treasury Secretary Yellen Calls for Cryptocurrency Regulation

In a speech delivered at the American University in Washington on Thurs., US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen called for more government regulation of digital assets, both to support innovation and regulate risk.
This follows an executive order signed by Pres. Biden in Mar. directing federal agencies to explore the potential risks and benefits of blockchain technology, as well as the possible creation of a central bank digital currency (CBDC).
Yellen voiced her support for a CBDC in theory, but cautioned that it could take years to develop.
Narrative A
The regulation of cryptocurrencies is an attempt to control what is feared. It will hurt innovation and come at the expense of crypto companies who will have to foot the bill to accommodate new rules. This will pressure crypto innovators to move abroad where laws are more lenient, putting the US at risk of losing its pivotal role in this industry.
Narrative B
Digital currencies are a fast-growing market, and government regulations will benefit all involved. They will potentially create more stability, protect long-term investors, prevent fraudulent activity, and provide clear guidance to companies. Increased regulations are a clear win-win for everyone.
Narrative C
The question isn't whether regulations should be implemented, but rather how they should be administered. The government needs to recognize that the world of digital assets is fundamentally different from any other financial market, and regulations must be tailored accordingly. Otherwise, we run the risk of playing an indefinite game of cat and mouse.
Day 45 Roundup: Boris Johnson Travels to Kyiv, Zelenskyy Calls for 'Global Response' to Kramatorsk Train Station Attack

British PM Boris Johnson traveled to Kyiv on Sat. to meet with Ukrainian Pres. Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in a show of "solidarity with the Ukrainian people." Austrian Chan. Karl Nehammer also met with the Ukrainian president.
Meanwhile, Zelenskyy called for a "firm, global response" in his nightly address on Fri., after Russia was accused of striking a train station packed with civilians in Kramatorsk, a city in the Donetsk Oblast of eastern Ukraine. The region's governor says 5 children were among 52 people killed in the attack.
Russia has denied striking any targets in Kramatorsk. After the wreckage of a Tochka-U missile was pictured near the train station, it commented that only Ukrainian Armed Forces used this type of munition – a disputed statement.
Anti-Russia narrative
This invasion is an egregious violation of international law. Putin's ultimate aim is to restore the Soviet empire, even if it takes massive bloodshed and false pretexts such as calling the 2014 Ukrainian revolution after a fraudulent election a "coup". This unprovoked attack is the latest chapter in Putin's Orwellian attempt to rewrite history.
Pro-Russia narrative
NATO and the US have ignored Russia's security concerns by breaking its promise not to expand eastward in return for German reunification. These concerns are legitimate and taking them seriously would have avoided the Ukraine tragedy.
Nerd narrative
According to the Metaculus prediction community, if a bilateral cease-fire agreement is reached between Russia and Ukraine this year, it won't take effect until the end of June.
