House Passes Bill Capping Insulin Costs at $35 a Month

House Passes Bill Capping Insulin Costs at $35 a Month

The Facts

  • On Thurs., the House passed a bill capping the cost of insulin to $35 per month for most Americans who use it.

  • Nearly 30M Americans currently live with diabetes, a condition treated with the drug.

  • This is a notably rare piece of bipartisan legislation, with the bill receiving support from 12 GOP members along with all Democrats in the House.

The Spin

Left narrative

This will ensure that Americans are never denied access to the life-saving medication because of economic inequality. Prices of insulin are massively inflated for consumers and complaints about price-fixing only play into the hands of Big Pharma.

Right narrative

Although this may seem compassionate, it doesn't address the core issue and instead simply shifts the cost to health insurers and employers, inevitably leading to higher premiums. It also risks increasing the price of other drugs because the legislation fails to reform the rebate system.

Turkey to Recommend Transfer of Khashoggi Trial to Saudi Arabia

Turkey to Recommend Transfer of Khashoggi Trial to Saudi Arabia

The Facts

  • Turkey's justice minister announced on Fri. that the government would recommend transferring the trial of 26 Saudi suspects charged with the killing of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi to Saudi Arabia.

  • A Turkish prosecutor called for the in absentia trial to be halted and transferred, at the request of Saudi Arabia. The move raises concerns about a possible cover-up.

  • Khashoggi, who wrote critically of Saudi Arabia's crown prince, disappeared in Oct. 2018 after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

The Spin

Narrative A

This is a dishonor to Khashoggi, and means that the trial will be delivered straight into the bloody hands of the perpetrators, where the crime will only be covered up. It's a spineless attempt to repair relations with Saudi Arabia at the expense of justice.

Narrative B

The killing of Khashoggi is a crime that tainted all Saudis and is inappropriately being used as a political tool to further push existing prejudices. The US intelligence report, which was nothing more than an assessment, is being unfairly treated as incriminating evidence. What happened to innocent until proven guilty?

Narrative C

This case isn't just about the death of one man. The killing of Khashoggi, a well-known and respected journalist, highlights the importance of freedom of the press and the lack of this freedom in so many instances. Justice for Khashoggi is an international human rights issue, impacting all of us.

US to Help China Download Cockpit Voice Recorder from Boeing Crash

US to Help China Download Cockpit Voice Recorder from Boeing Crash

The Facts

  • On Fri., the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) announced that it will help China download the cockpit voice recorder from China Eastern Flight MU5735, which crashed on Mar. 21.

  • NTSB has deployed a 3-person team to support the investigation and work alongside the Civil Aviation Admin of China.

  • The Boeing commercial aircraft crashed en route from Kunming to Guangzhou, killing all 123 passengers and 9 crew members on board.

The Spin

Establishment-critical narrative

This tragedy unfortunately may be but the latest in Boeing's recent string of malfunctions. Pressure from its rival, Airbus, has likely given the company financial incentive to cut corners, and travelers are right to remain distrustful. Although it may be too soon to know what caused the crash, Boeing needs to prove that it values safety over profit.

Pro-establishment narrative

The 800 that crashed is one of the safest and most widely used aircraft in the world. There's been no indication of foul play or negligence, and the investigation must be led with facts. Chinese authorities are rightfully using caution in the face of the ongoing investigation and will share details when the root cause of the crash is determined.

Russia, Citing Sanctions, Threatens to End International Space Station Cooperation

Russia, Citing Sanctions, Threatens to End International Space Station Cooperation

The Facts

  • Dmitry Rogozin, the head of Russia's space agency Roscosmos, threatened to end cooperation with the International Space Station (ISS) on Sat., citing Western sanctions on his country.

  • He said the "illegal" sanctions were designed to bring Russia to its knees and that cooperation on joint ISS projects would only be possible after their complete and unconditional removal.

  • The US, Europe and other allies such as Japan imposed a series of wide-ranging sanctions on Russia after it launched its military offensive into Ukraine on Feb. 24.

The Spin

Narrative A

The International Space Station has long been an important symbol of human cooperation against a backdrop of wars and savagery. Its breakup would be a sad day for science and humanity.

Narrative B

It was a short-sighted decision from the US to rely on Russia for the success of its space missions. The recent events in Ukraine underscore the need to immediately break this dependency and for the US to develop its own capabilities.

Biden 'Confident' That Son Hunter Didn't Break Law Amid Federal Probe into China Dealings

Biden 'Confident' That Son Hunter Didn't Break Law Amid Federal Probe into China Dealings

The Facts

  • White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain said Pres. Biden is "confident" that his son Hunter didn't break the law. In recent months, a federal grand jury have reportedly been investigating details of his business dealings in China.

  • After initially dismissing the contents of Hunter Biden's hard drives as a Russian misinformation campaign in 2020, the Washington Post on Mar. 30 confirmed the files connecting Hunter with CEFC China Energy were genuine and that he, alongside his uncle James Biden, received $4.8M from the state-controlled energy conglomerate.

  • On the same day, Senators Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Ron Johnson (R-WI) took to the Senate floor to condemn the business dealings and provided a receipt for a $100k payment from the Chinese energy firm going to the Bidens.

The Spin

Right narrative

There is no doubt that this was a disinformation campaign, but it wasn't Russian. The dangerous alliance of mainstream media and big tech together conspired to silence the story of Hunter's laptop along with evidence of Joe Biden's own corruption.

Left narrative

This story is a long way from over, and when all is said and done it won't be a story about Hunter's laptop any more, but rather one of rampant corruption within the Trump wing of the GOP and a shameless effort to hold on to power whatever the cost to truth and American democracy.

Establishment-critical narrative

The mainstream media was so busy fighting Russian misinformation that it forgets it has serious misinformation problems of its own. Mainstream media needs to acknowledge its own flaws if it's ever going to regain public trust.

Hungary Elects Viktor Orban for a Fifth Term

Hungary Elects Viktor Orban for a Fifth Term

The Facts

  • Incumbent prime minister of Hungary, Victor Orban, won a super-majority in Sunday's parliamentary elections. This will be his fourth consecutive term in office and fifth term overall.

  • According to the National Election Office, Orban's Fidesz party won a two-thirds parliament majority (135 seat) with results showing almost 99% of the votes counted. The opposition alliance has 56 seats and Our Homeland, a far-right party, has 7 seats.

  • Orban was opposed by a six-party pro-European opposition coalition, United for Hungary, that had rallied its efforts behind candidate Péter Márki-Zay. Orban had shifted the tone of his campaign since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, with promises to keep Hungary out of the war.

The Spin

Narrative A

The re-election of Hungary's authoritarian leader, who is pioneering a form of illiberal democracy, comes at the worst possible time for Europe. Orban is pro-Putin and pro-Russia, and even went so far as to condemn Ukrainian president Zelenskyy for not supporting him during his victory speech. He is being celebrated by authoritarian-minded people around the world.

Narrative B

This election was about Hungary - not Russia, Ukraine, or Europe. Orban's clear victory will send a strong message to the European Commission; he stood up for Hungary's independence and freedom, as well as its peace and security. In the referendum, the voters rejected foreign meddling by Brussels, Washington and the international left, and stood up to protect the Hungarian youth and families.

Day 40 Roundup: International Outrage Mounts After Mass Graves Found in Bucha, Russia Denies War Crime Accusations

Day 40 Roundup: International Outrage Mounts After Mass Graves Found in Bucha, Russia Denies War Crime Accusations

The Facts

  • World leaders have condemned Russia and called for an independent investigation after images circulating on Apr. 2 showed a number of dead bodies scattered across the streets of Bucha, a small city on the outskirts of Kyiv, and reports of mass graves emerged. Biden also called for Putin to be tried for war crimes on Mon.

  • Russia has denied allegations of war crimes and accused Ukraine of staging the images, stating that no civilian casualties were reported when Russian troops withdrew from the city on Mar. 30.

  • Russia's Ministry of Defence further pointed to a statement from Bucha Mayor Anatoly Fedoruk on Mar. 31 in which he said Ukrainian officials were sweeping the streets for Russian mines, but made no mention of mass civilian casualties.

The Spin

Anti-Russia narrative

This invasion is an egregious violation of international law. Putin's ultimate aim is to restore the Soviet empire, even if it takes massive bloodshed and false pretexts such as calling the 2014 Ukrainian revolution after a fraudulent election a "coup". This unprovoked attack is the latest chapter in Putin's Orwellian attempt to rewrite history.

Pro-Russia narrative

NATO and the US have ignored Russia's security concerns by breaking its promise not to expand eastward in return for German reunification. These concerns are legitimate and taking them seriously would have avoided the Ukraine tragedy.

Nerd narrative

According to the Mentaculus prediction community, if a bilateral cease-fire agreement is reached between Russian and Ukraine this year, it won't take effect until the end of June.

Judge Rules California’s Corporate Diversity Law Unconstitutional

Judge Rules California’s Corporate Diversity Law Unconstitutional

The Facts

  • A California judge has ruled that the state's landmark law mandating diversity on corporate boards is unconstitutional.

  • The measure, which was signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom in 2020, mandated that publicly-traded companies with executive offices based in the state had to appoint board members from an "underrepresented community," including LGBTQ+, Black, Latino, Asian, Native American or Pacific Islander.

  • The ruling came in response to a motion for summary judgement filed by Judicial Watch, a conservative legal watchdog that filed suit against the law soon after it was passed last year.

The Spin

Conservative narrative

Newsom's law was a blatant attack on that most basic of American values - the constitutional right of equal protection under the law. This is a victory for anti-discrimination.

Progressive narrative

The measure was a way for CA to "walk the walk" on diversity. It was designed to improve corporate responsibility by allowing the benefits of diverse perspectives to improve business practices and culture. This is a blow for underrepresented groups.

Republican narrative

Newsom is a naive progressive populist who's bowed to the pressures of the woke radical left, which continues to attack the very foundations of our civilization.

Refugee Camp at US-Mexico Border Sees Influx of Ukrainians

Refugee Camp at US-Mexico Border Sees Influx of Ukrainians

The Facts

  • The Mexican border city of Tijuana has seen a vast influx of Ukrainian refugees since the Biden admin. announced that the US would take up to 100k people fleeing the war with Russia.

  • As of Sun. night, 1.7k Ukrainians are estimated to have arrived in the city in recent weeks; some 400 of them over the past weekend. Roughly 30% are children.

  • Ukrainians arriving in the city benefit from the fact that they don't need visas to enter into Mexico.

The Spin

Left narrative

The hospitality being shown to Ukrainian refugees in Mexico and efforts to relocate them to the US are welcome, but more must be done to speed up asylum applications and to protect vulnerable applicants who remain camped on the border.

Right narrative

The Biden administration has let in an influx of migrants from global trouble spots in recent years, and the US cannot accommodate any more. They should instead focus on supporting the resettlement of Ukrainians in nearby countries so they can more easily return home when the situation stabilizes.

Establishment-critical narrative

The West's open-arms welcome for Ukrainians stands opposite to its treatment of refugees from places like Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan. Systemic racism, xenophobia, and the unjust stigma of "terrorism" are uncomfortable issues that need to be discussed deeply in host countries.

Nerd narrative

The Metaculus community predicts that 344k refugees will be admitted to the US between 2021 and 2024.

Former UN Prosecutor Calls for Arrest Warrant for Putin

Former UN Prosecutor Calls for Arrest Warrant for Putin

The Facts

  • On Sat., the former chief prosecutor for two UN war crimes tribunals, Carla Del Ponte, called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue an arrest warrant for Putin.

  • This follows allegations of war crimes committed by Russia, including mass graves found in the city of Bucha, attacks on civilians, and the destruction of entire villages.

  • Although neither Russia nor Ukraine are members of the ICC, an investigation into alleged war crimes committed in Ukraine was opened in Feb. upon Ukraine's authorization.

The Spin

Anti-Russia narrative

Russian forces have been committing war crimes since the start of the invasion, motivated by Putin's determination to restore the Soviet empire. Events like the genocide in Bucha cannot go unpunished. The international community must work with the ICC to hold perpetrators accountable.

Pro-Russia narrative

Ukraine and the West are deliberately encouraging anti-Russian sentiment around the world by spreading fake news. The alleged massacre in Bucha is another attempt to damage Russian credibility, even after previous accusations were proven to be fake.

Nerd narrative

The Metaculus Community predicts a 60% chance that the ICC will charge Vladimir Putin with war crimes by 2024 in connection to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
