Mark Carney’s Liberal Party won a minority government in the April 28 Canadian election, securing 169 of 343 seats, to the Conservatives’ 144. The Bloc Québécois won 22 seats, the New Democratic Party 7 and the Green Party 1. The race for prime minister was contested between Mark Carney (Liberal Party), Pierre Poilievre (Conservative Party), Jagmeet Singh (New Democratic Party), Yves-François Blanchet (Bloc Québécois), Jonathan Pedneault (Green Party), and Maxime Bernier (People's Party). The Liberal Party has held power since former PM Justin Trudeau's election victory over the Conservatives in November 2015.
