World Politics

Trump held a phone call with Vladimir Putin,as the Russian president also spoke with France's Emmanuel Macron in their first call since 2022,Israel and Syria engaged in talks about potentially ending hostilities,the U.S. hosted foreign ministers from Australia, India, and Japan,and Trump signed a memorandum to tighten Washington's policy toward Cuba.This comes as Trump announced a U.S. trade deal with Vietnam,as he warned of higher tariffs on Japanese exports,European Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič traveled to Washington,and the EU and Ukraine reached a new trade agreement.In other news, the U.N.'s Financing for Development summit opened in Spain,Russia became the first nation to recognize the Taliban's government,Iran-linked hackers allegedly threatened to release stolen emails from Trump associates,as the U.S. warned of potential Iranian cyber threats,and Washington imposed new sanctions on Iranas it lifted sanctions on Syria.Elsewhere, Denmark assumed the presidency of the European Union Council,the EU Parliament prepared to vote on a no-confidence motion against European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen,South Korea revised its martial law rules,Tanzanian Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa said he would not seek reelection,and Mali's interim president's rule was extended to 2030.Meanwhile, Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra was suspended,a Costa Rican court sought to strip President Rodrigo Chaves of his immunity,the U.S. disrupted alleged North Korean IT worker schemes across the nation,Poland reinstated border controls with Germany and Lithuania,Italy approved nearly 500,000 work visas,and Mali adopted a new law to protect stateless people.In the U.K., a new investigation was ordered into MI5 for providing false evidence to multiple courts,a welfare reform bill passed after concessions from the government,and Zarah Sultana announced her resignation from the Labor Party.
