If European leaders are involved in the process, this would the right outcome. Ukraine, for its part, is ready to negotiate. It only depends on whether Russia is really ready to engage.
Pro-Russia narrative
Russia is hearing statements from European capitals that they will have to talk to Moscow at some point. Russia has always been of the view that it's better to engage as it's better to talk than head for complete confrontation — which has been the approach of the Europeans throughout the conflict in Ukraine. If the Europeans now favor the route of diplomacy, Russia only welcomes it and it would be a positive step.
