Was Vietnam's 99% election turnout a triumph of democracy or an authoritarian performance?

With a turnout of 99.64% and some locations hitting 100% voter participation, this election demonstrated genuine civic enthusiasm, which provides the 16th National Assembly a powerful mandate heading into its 2026-2031 term.

A 99% turnout in a one-party state isn't democracy — it's theater. In reality, Vietnam bans most opposition, restricts free expression and has ramped up one of its worst crackdowns on dissent in decades. When the government blocks independent candidates and silences civil society, sky-high participation rates reflect coercion and control, rather than genuine democratic will.
