The Facts

  • U.S. Vice President JD Vance answered questions on several topics during a CBS News town hall in Michigan that aired Saturday. On his potential future run for president, Vance said that "there's a chance" he won't run in 2028, citing his four young children and his wife's dislike of politics.
  • Vance said that the economy will need more than 18 months to turn around, telling a small-business owner that the country was not broken in a single presidential term but over the course of several.
  • Asked by a Detroit barber about high gas prices, Vance blamed the loss of about 20% of U.S. refining capacity under Joe Biden. Anchor Tony Dokoupil countered that after nearly two years, "it becomes your economy." Gas averages $4.30 a gallon nationally.

The Spin

Republican narrative

Vance did everything right in this town hall. He answered straight and pledged to follow the law, which beats weaseling. He held strong against biased questions about immigration and smears about corruption related to the president. Vance upheld the standard voters deserve.

Democratic narrative

Far from being straight with the voters, Vance was lawyerly, using phrases that didn't specifically answer the questions that were presented to him. He continued to blame Biden for the administration's failures, while making excuses and even shrugging at a grieving widower's demand for accountability.
