That a notorious torturer with deep ties to the Assad regime could get a green card is testament to the lax attitude taken towards vetting, which remains wholly inadequate. Applicants from high-risk countries were waved through without the scrutiny basic security demands. The fact that it took victims of this monster to point him out to authorities to catch him is shameful, and it's sadly just one example among many.
Pro-establishment narrative
Catching human rights abusers who lie their way in is already the job, and it gets done through patient investigation and prosecution. A former Syrian prison chief accused of torture was indicted, just as a Liberian warlord, a Rwandan genocide leader and an Ethiopian prison guard were convicted and stripped of citizenship. That is what actually works, and the U.S. remains committed to human rights enforcement.
